clunking noise

Whenever I hit a bump that makes the car bounce pretty hard, ther is a clunking noise near the rear. A mechanic said that I should take it to a shop and check out the shocks because he thinks there shot. Is that true. Anybody else have this problem?

Check the tranny mount first, make sure all of the lug nuts are tight and torqued properly (80 lb-ft for aluminum wheels), and make sure the bolts/nuts for all of the rear suspension components (shocks, lower trailing arms, panhard rod, and torque arm) are tight. If everything checks out OK, then yeah it could be the shocks.

I recently had a problem with a clunking noise from the rear. It ended up being the worn out end links on the rear anit-sway bar.
