wheel studs...to trust or not to??

The other day while removing my rear wheels to change the springs out i broke two wheel studs on a wheel that already had a broken one to begin with...all the other studs on the car are fine, and I intend to replace the 5 on the wheel that they broke on, but should I trust the rest of them or just replace them all, I haven't actually removed my front wheels yet though, so for all I know some of those might snap, but the other rear wheel had no problem at all.

I'd replace all 20 before driving the car. I'd also give the rest of the car a serious look over before driving.

If that means only two studs remain, I'd suggest not driving the car until all are replaced.

I think he is asking if he should change all of the studs on the other wheels.

I personally would inspect them, but if they appear to be in good shape, I would leave them alone.

Yeah but what determines good shape? I mean the two that broke, the metal wasn't rusted through or anything, and I'm aware that it can't be driven like that, though even if I wanted to, there are other reasons I can't...Guess it would help if I knew why exactly they broke, ie. whether it was weak metal, the surface rust, or the lug nut not budging...

Who knows when the last time the lugs were removed or how tightly they were torqued the last time.

And see, that's why I'm unsure, because those things were rusted the hell on there, and I went at them with a 26" breaker bar, that thing can put some torque down, and I'm wondering if the only reason they snapped is because the lugs weren't moving and all that force had nowhere else to go...as in maybe it was just that the lug's grip on that thing was stronger than the stud, so the weaker link gave out?

I twisted one off on an S-10 once because the impact gun wouldn't break it loose. Sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

Re: wheel studs...to trust or not to??

Eh, I've yet to find something too difficult to fix, except for bodywork because I lack that little bit of necessary artistic ability, replacing them will be the easy part, the hard part is the money =/ Things are rough atm, my job cut my hours way back a while ago, and I'm going under, my DD also became too expensive to maintain and I had to junk it, so now I have no driveable car or money. Which also this car has become a bigger project than initially...supposedly it just needed HGs for the engine, but the block turned out to be cracked, I knew it needed a windshield, and exhaust, other than that, just some little things. But then the left rear spring broke sometime after I bought it while sitting there...replaced those, noticed one of the shocks has a hole in the shell, so need to do those too now, and its fairly probable the front needs shocks and springs as well(though from what I've heard the front springs are less likely to go bad because they're heavier duty, and thus thicker), and quite probable that my brakes need work, but its getting there, slowly...just annoyed that it needed all this extra work, because if it didn't I'd have it finished and not have to walk or bum rides everywhere =/

I bought a rearend for my car and one stud looked rusty, so I replaced all 10. They're about $1.15ea, and you'll feel better knowing they're all shiny any new.
