Why can't you put 4th gen brakes on 3rd gen?

I have seen some posts with people asking about mounting 4th gen brakes on a 3rd gen car and the answer I always see is "no, it cant be done" I have not had a chance to see a 4th gen brake setup up close but I was wondering why can it not be done? It seems like alot of us are great at making modifications to improve the power, handling, and stopping of our cars but this seems to be something no one will tackle. I see alot of people trying to get 1LE setups but the tracking down of all the parts and possibly not being able to find everything needed is a little unsettling. Baer is always a good choice if you have $1,500 - $2,000 to dump into a brake upgrade. If anyone has any info or reasons why this cant be done I would love to know.

The 93+ rear brakes are the same as 89-92 rear brakes and should bolt up with no problems. However the front brakes attach completely different than thirdgen brakes. Thats why we say it wont work.

Just out of curiosity, are 4th gen's coil Over or Not, And Do they have upper and lower balljoints ? or just lower ? Im feeling embarrased at my lack of knowledge...

Cause if not, Someone could make a spindle designed to fit the 4thgen calipers and Rotors, While maintaining the 3rdgen Balljoint and Strut mounting locations. probrably anyways providing there wasnt any serious interferance problems.

But who would go throught all that trouble, when you could just upgrade to 1LE brakes

Okay. It sounds like a 1LE upgrade is down the road for me. I recv'd my Next Generation parts catalog from Year One a few weeks ago and they claim to have a complete 1LE Front Brake Upgrade Kit with everything you need to do the conversion for $995.00.(calipers, spindles, hardware, etc.) The kit is made by Stainless Steel Brakes (SSBC) Does anyone have any experience with their kits or this kit inpaticular?
Thank you guys for all the info you have given me so far.

4thgens use a short/long arm suspension in the front with two balljoints (upper and lower), shocks instead of struts, and rack and pinion steering.

The rear brakes are a different story since the rear suspension is pretty much identical. I think you COULD even bolt LS1 rear brakes in, though I have no idea what you'd do for a MC/PV combo.

Oh and Kevin... I am pretty sure the rear brakes changed in '98 with the introduction of the LS1. So only the '93-'97 4thgens had the same rear brakes as the 89-92 3rdgens.

OK, heres a hypothetical situation. Say a friend of mine is going to sell me a rear end out of a 98 LS1 car that has some 3.73s in it.....Now, can I just take my 9bolt out and put this 98 ten-bolt rear in and use the 98 brakes?

4thgens are supposed to have their front brakes related to C4'Vette/1LE brakes, so its concievable that with a spindle modified for 1LE brakes you could put '98+ LS1 brakes on. Its worth looking into.
