Steering Wheel "Shimmy"

I've noticed a shimmy in my steering wheel lately, actually for some time. When driving at any speed the steering wheel acts like it has Parkinson's and "wiggles" back and forth about half an inch. Is this caused by my tires (Futura GLHs with 35K) or something else?

I know of someone that had the same problem and he decided to change his front tires. He did that and found out that his rims were bent. He hit something that bent his rims and now he has to pay $180 for a new rim. I would find a different set of tires and rims and change your front tires one at a time. Like, change the right front and then drive it and see if it shimmys. If it doesnt then that rim is the ruined one. Do it until you find out which one or two of your rims are ruined. then buy new rims. good luck

Well here is what makes me think its the tires. It will go away after a while. As a matter of fact I'm almost positive it is the tires. The car sits ALOT and when the weather is cold the car rides like POOP for the first half hour. After that things seem to smooth out.

Time for the Yokohamas!!

MIne did that and I found out that the tilt mechanism had worked its way ever so slightly loose. The only problem is that you have to take half your steering colum apart to fix it, Thoug it is free if you do it yourself. I would try putting a different set of wheels on the front. Borrow them from someone and see if thats the problem, if it is get your new wheels, or tires. If not try what I said. I would always try the easy way first.

UPDATE>>>>

For the hell of it I decided to tighten that little allen screw on top of the steering gear box. I got about 3 1/2 turs before it snugged up. Then I backed off a 1/4 turn and tightened the bolt careful to keep the allen screw from moving.

DAY and NIGHT difference!!!! The car feels 10 years newer! Very popsitive feedback from the wheel as well. No more "wandering" like it used to do. No more fighting with the wheel at every stop light either.

Thanks!!!!
