clunking....need help to figure it out

first off i have an 86 camaro. i have noticed that lately ive developed some sort of clunking when i take it down the road. It sounds like its coming from up from but i can feel it slightly on my feet when there on the floor. Sounds to me like its metal on metal so you know how that goes, could be anywere. It mainly happens when im driving down the road and i go over a bump or a change in the road. I have also noticed it now and than when i am turning. Im thinking it may be the springs. when i went out to push down on the front end, the passenger side seemed to sound like it was rubbing (possibly shock) and was harder to push down. on the driver side i havnt really heard a rub or anything when i was pushing down, and this side is alot easier to push down. when i glanced at my shock on the passenger side i noticed what looks to be a fresh scrapes on it where it slides up into the boot. I hope you guys and gals can help me figure this out before i spend money on things that dont need to be replaced.

i know the tranny mount needs to be fixed along with a new throwout bearing but i dont believe it to be the tranny mount to be making this noise cus when i hear it the shifter itself dont move up and down at all. and sounds like its infront of the passenger, not underneath

i figured out where the noise is coming from now. either one of 2 things, spring or shock. most likely shock cus the car rides stiff now and is really hard to push the front down. It only clunks when i have a passenger so im glad i dont have passengers very often. hoping to get it fixed soon.

Do you have Bilstein struts by chance?

If so then check the strut assembly under the dust boot toi see if it is threading apart (coming undone). I fellow member had this problem and the LF suspension was clunking but he could not figure out where it was coming from- took me about an hour to find it and I was shocked (pun intened) to find the BIlstein coming apart.

Re: clunking....need help to figure it out

i have no idea if there bilsteins or not, as far as i know there stock. how would i be able to tell if there bilsteins or if its coming undone? i have noticed that when i look under there i can see vertical shiny spots just under the boot on the passenger side. havnt looked at the driver side yet but id imagine its the same way. if it comin undone like you describe, could i just screw it back together?

Check the ball joint, and spring. Could be a broken coil, get in there w/ a flashlight and in spect it closely, especially the top and bottom, where they seat into the frame and control arm...
