89 rear setup

I have an 86 T/A, has the rear disc setup on it(26 spline) I have an 89 disc setup w/rotors, calipers, brackets(backing plates)and all cables. how hard would it be to put the 89 stuff on the 86 rear? I heard that you have to shave the inner part of the rotor(89)to make it fit. Has anyone tried this w/success?
Also can i use the same master cylinder and proportioning valve or do i need the 89 setup too?

Um, yeah.... I told you before Tony, it won't work at all... you need to sell that '89 rear disk setup to ME

9 bolts have 9 bolt brackets (left side unavailable), 10 bolts have 10 bolt brackets which are both available from the dealer - about $25 each. If I recall that '86 still has the 9 bolt so it's an almost no-brainer. You need to use the parking brake cables for an '89 also.

If you're going all '89, use all the '89 mc/prop valve stuff you can. You have to bleed the whole mess anyhow. And you probably need to change the fluid anyhow also.

Sure wish you were my neighbor!! I'm kind of hesitant to pull my axles, from what I expieranced w/my other rear--no problem pulling stuff apart but putting it back together that's another story! How should those axles come out? I had a hard time getting the other ones out--maybe that's why that washer broke! Don't know my own strength!

Something Snakeskinner told me about awhile back.

Yeah, get the caliper off, take the 4 bolts that hold the mounting bracket out. Then get an old wheel and put the 5 lugnuts on just a couple of threads each.
Push the wheel back against the axle and then give it a quick jerk out!!! Might take a couple times if they've been in there awhile. That's a really, really cheap slidehammer.

To put them back in, just carefully slide them back in, get the splines all lined up, make sure ya don't get the seal goofed up and push... it might take a few whacks with a hammer to get it seated back in... not a sledgehammer tho!!!

Hmmmm--I'll have to try that. That's a good idea tho. Think the 86 brake lines will line up w/the 89 calipers? I know the 89's are at the opposite sides then the 86's.

Don't forget you have to take out the pinion shaft bolt, and shaft out and take the C-locks out of the diff. before yanking the axles, or else they will NEVER come out!!

The 89 doesn't have that setup--I think that's just the 10 bolts w/the pin and clips.
