I'm about to buy a set of 17x8" IROC rims from AAArims, i need to know how wide i can go with my tires. i was hoping for around a 255/45 or 275/40, i definitely want the widest tire possible on the back, but the rims are only 8" and the wheelwells look kinda tight. let me know what you guys think!

I was considering that same thing. Or mabey even the 18x8 chrome. But 275 on the back are a MUST so if anyone knows to answer to this question we could both use it. Thanx

275/40 tires require at least a 9" wide wheel, 9.5" would be even better. Those tires will fit under the wheel wells of our cars just fine with the right offset, but I don't know what that is off the top of my head. With 8 inch wheels, you really shouldn't go any wider then 265.

A friend of mine has a 4th gen T/A (not sure if they have same wheelwell depth as the 3rd gen or not) with 17x10 rims with 315/35/17's on it and they don't stick out. I didn't believe it at first until he showed me the car. I'm not sure what the backspacing was on those rims but I was impressed, even the corvette grand sports poke out a little (hence the flares). When I meet up with him again this sat I will get some pics and the backspacing of the rims.

My 86 IROC has Goodyear 255/50-16's up front and they seem to fit fine. The BFG 295/50-16's on the back are too tall/wide. The rub on the inside of the fender if I throw it into a turn too hard and they rub under the the outside of the fender lip when I hit a small bump under acceleration.

I'm running 315/35-17 Drag Radials on 8" Eagle rims

This is a good topic. I too would like to get the chrome iroc rims but the 8 inch width makes me wonder about the tire size. I would like to see an eight inch rim with a 275 tire on it. I have been told it would work but might stick out just a little. I have seen the 275 on 9 inch rims and they are just about perfect but will an eight inch rim make that much difference?

if you get the right backspacing you can do anything....

Widest in the front you'll ever want to go is 265 though unless you want some serious tire rubbing... 245 or 255 in the front is fine...

Assuming you're good with backspacing you can stuff 315's on the rear easilly... I had 305's on the back of my 83 last year when i bought it...the guy just had the wrong backspacing of the wheels.

I saw a 255 on a 8 inch rim today and it looked perfect. I would still like to see a 275 on a 8 inch rim. I have not seen a set of the chrome irocs on a car yet. Any pictures guys? ( 17 x 8 inch )

275's on 8" rims...you have got to be kidding me the most i have seen people get by safely with is 255's on 8" rims. now if you get 9.5 or 10" wide tires you can put 275's and 335's on there and they will fit with the right backspacing. if you put 275's on a 8" rim it would look like the tire *** about to explode and it probably wouldnt fit on the rim

I just wish you could get the chrome irocs in a 17 x 9 inch rim. I will have to run a 275 drag radial to get traction and just can't find the right rim, dammit!

My BFG 315/35-17 Drag Radials fit perfectly on my 8" wheels. BFG recommends 8 1/2 to 11, but the 8" Eagles I'm running look perfect. I believe the back spacing is 4 1/2 if I remember right. Look in their catalog. They are off the shelf, and the cheapest 17's I could find at the time. They look good too.

putting 315's on an 8 inch wheel? man you're nuts... your tire walls have got to be completely shot...

I had 305/50/15's on centerline 10.5's ... you really want to do atleast a 10.5 possibly 11 if you do 305+ tires man...
like I said before though... just get the right backspacing... get the wider rear wheels just get the backspacing right and you'll be doin good...

305's or 315's WON'T stick out or rub if you have the right backspacing ...

But they will totally screw you if you put them on 8inch wide wheels ... thats just a scary fookin thought!!

Oh, may as well add... 265-275 would be your best bet for the 8's... i think i skipped that in my previous posts hehe

My RS has 335/35/ZR17's on a 17 X 12 rim in the rear, and 275/40/Zr17, on a 17 X 9.5 on the front. I had to do some minor clearancing of the inner fenferwell and the lower control arms on the rear but now they don't scub. The fronts will scrub only at full lock in reverse. They will not do going forward. Besides the clearancing and the scrubbing in reverse sometimes, The car is no different than it was when I had 16 X 8 IROC rims on it, except it handles MUCH better, and looks awesome.

there is one piece of info that everyone seems to agree is absolutely key, but no one has mentioned. please include the backspacing with your post -- some of us would like to accomplish this without trial and error

I had a set of factory camaro rims 15"x7" and i had 255 60R15's on and had no prob with them at all. They were a little big but I liked them on the car.
