cutting springs

I've heard of people cutting their own stock springs. Can it be done? How do you do it? Is it bad? Thanks for all the info. I'm kinda doing the "broke man" drop :-)

It will ride like sh*! and then you will have to buy springs to fix it. Do it right the first time is always far cheaper than the half a$$ method first then fix it right. If you can't afford to do it properly don't do it. But if you want to jar your teeth out (better have good dental insurance) then cut a way.

Cutting springs is like cutting off table legs. Ever see one that didn't wobble? If you're very careful, it's your car and you can do what ever you want. If you want a better way to lower cheaply listen up. Get some bricks or wood or what ever and put them under the front crossmember at the height that you want to lower to. Then using the torch, heat(not cut) the very top coil of the spring until the car begins to settle. DO NOT torch the whole spring as it will never spring again, and don't let the rest of the surrounding spring heat soak while you're torching the top. Do this to all 4 corners and you'll have a level home grown lowering job. I do however recomend the lowering spring, drop spindles, camber plates, and LCA relocators if you have the money.

For the love of God don't heat the springs. There's not a chance that you will get even heating to all the springs... then they will settle differently. The stock springs will just keep shrinking if you do this.

Cutting them will only promote sagging too... usually more in the back than in the front... won't that look pretty?

Buy new springs.

The stock springs keep shrinking no matter what happens. My car is probably an inch lower than when I bought it. If you take materials class you learn that a spring is just a bar that has been twisted in the elastic area of its stress strain curve. You'll also learn that heating or annealing relieves stress in metals. That is why springs wear out is because twisting causes heat which relieves stress which makes it not want to rebound all the way back. The trick is to heat it so that it just barely rests on the blocks. I didn't say that it was easy. I just said that it cheap. If you do it right it does work. I also said that I didn't recomend it, because it's easy to screw it up.
