welding in SFC'c
welding in SFC'c
ok i have an arc welder that can be used for frame work. i had read on the board sometime a few months ago that you didnt want any flex/strain on hte chassis when you welded these in. how would i support the car without having flex, and i dont own a lift.

If you have a garage with a level concreate floor you can jack the car up and put jackstands under the front control arms as close to the wheels as you can get them and under the axle tubes as close to the rear wheels as you can get them. Make sure all the jackstands are the same height.

Superman, is that techique safe? I would like to weld in my own but also don't have a lift yet. If welded in by your suggestion, would they work and be just as strong as if they were welded on a lift?

Are the frame rails thick enough for an arc welder?

Yes,this is a safe way to weld in the sub-fram connectors. I've done it this way on about four cars and they all worked out fine. Like I said the biggest thing is to make sure thes stands have the car level to the way it sits on the ground. I have never done this with a arc welder. All the welding on frames and roll cages I have ever done has been with a mig,so your on your on on that.
A MIG welder(GMAW) is a type of arc welder, so is TIG(GTAW). If you are referring to stick(SMAW) welding I would recommend using small diameter electrodes(3/32") that are rated for use in "out of position" welding. Usually if the third number is a "1" the electrode will work well in all postions, i.e. 6010, 6013, 7018, etc... If you weld to the floor pans MIG will require much less skill and will be less likely to burn through.

Hi,
I'd like to get SFC's for my vert.
But, I don't know how to weld and don't have any equipment even if I did know how to weld.
I've seen the bolt on SFC's are they just as good as the weld on types??
I do know someone who is a welder and a damn good one, but he would charge a good chunk of change.
He does it for a living and there are no discounts.

Sunbitz,
The bolt in type sub fram connecters are good when you first put them in. After being in a while the bolt holes elongage due to the torque and stress put on them and do no hold anymore. I would pay the little extra to have the weld in type put in.

Thanks!
That makes perfect sense to me.
Never really thought of it that way.
I'll do a bit of saving and get the weld on type.
Thanks Again!!

I've e-mailed you my recommenedation for a local SoCal shop to weld on the SFC's. BTW, only two brands work for a 'vert (Alston & Kenny Brown). Good luck, Lon.
