installing rear control arms
installing rear control arms
I just got some tubular rear control arms and I have a couple of simple questions. First, can these be installed without upgrading anything else? Second, do these need to be installed in the air, then torqued on the ground? Any other helpful hints for someone whose never done this before? Thanks.

1) Yes
2) Yes, torque on the ground at ride height.
It's fairly easy, just unbolt and swap. Don't forget the lube for the bushings and if they're greasable, ensure the fittings are pointing down so you can reach 'em.

Only unbolt and change one lca at a time. It will make putting it back together alot easier.
Thanks. Its a good thing I asked. The instructions don't say anything about torquing on the ground. They are greasable, which brings another question to mind. How much grease should I use? Also what should I torque to? Is it same as factory torque specs? I appreciate the help.

The LCA's I just got from SPOHN came with good instructions and they say to install hand tight then lower the car to the ground and tighten bolts to 72 ft/lbs. dry or 55 ft/lbs. lubed, I assume yours would have the same torque but I'm not sure.

You can make the "torque down" part of life easier with a floor jack. Put the floor jack under the center of the axle, and raise the back of the car. Remove the rear tires. Now, lower the jack so the back of the car is at ride height. This will let you get to those lower control arm bolts easier, without fighting around the tire. You're still loading the rear suspension, since the weight of the car will be on the axle thru the floor jack.
