Weak brakes...

My brakes are really weak, adn i thin kit may be the proportioning valve or the booster itself.

How can I do tests to make sure they are working fine or defective.

I can step on the brakes, super firm pedal, no air in the sytem, and when I hit the brakes, it feels like the car just slides and doesn't grip and stop.

I do have a nice size cam in the car but I am also running a vacuum can.

Any help would be appreciated.

What year car is it? Do you have the stock rear disc setup? By the way doesn't the gear drive screw up the knock sensor on the engine? Answer these please. Then we can test the brake booster.

It is a 1989 Pontiac Formula 350.

It has the WS6 performance package which includes 4 wheel disc brakes.

And no, the gear drive, Pete Jackson quiet one, does not screw up the knock sensor. This is a common myth that keeps getting spead around.

I have the EASE diagnostic tool that I keep hooked up to it via my laptop, and I have checked when drag racing and my 4 hour trip to Chicago. Not one single knock signal was registered. I even made sure my knock sensor was working.

Some of us members have been fighting this myth for years. I have had a gear drive on my car since spring of 1997.

ttt again. I'm having a similar problem. The pedal is firm, but half way through travel it gets wicked hard and i can't press anymore, and braking power sucks. WTF? Also, when bleeding the rears, the pedal can only go down like half way, but bleeding the fronts it goes to the floor. Whats the deal?

The more I drive and pay attention to my braking, the more I think it is in the front brakes only.

I also noticed a bunch of black sludge in the resevoir in both sides.

All pads are getting used, just I think not the fronts as much. Especially if they are suppose to be doing 70% of the braking power.....
