Loud Clonking noise from the rear axle when accelerating from a stop
I have noticed that on my 87 Z28, when put in drive and accelerated (mostly under hard acceleration) from a stop, something in the rear axle area produces a loud clonk which seems to come from the passenger side of the car though I am not positive. I visually inspected the rear suspension but couldn't find anything wrong. I am planning to redo a mode careful inspection but I wonder if anyone has an idea on what could be happening? Thanks in advance

You will have to define the word "clonk." Is it a clunk, is it a knock. Pick one and go with it. Are there any other problems relating to handling, exhaust, etc...
It does sound like a clunk and I noticed a difference in handling in the rear axle; It feels as if the rear end of the car is looser or as if a suspension member is broken. I also wonder if bad bushings could cause it?

when I had my subframes put on I had to disconnect the lca's and BOTH the bolts were broken causing the klunking you may be talking about.

I can damn sure bet its your rear trans mount just pop a jack under it (on the pan) and use a flashlight to look underneath towards the rear where the braces are you should see the rubber mount and as you jack up the trans if its broke you will see the bushing just split and the trans will lift up if not you will notice the trans moving up very little then the car will start to lift. If its not separated its somthing else. The bushing is like 9 bucks a pepboys and takes about 15 minutes to replace just make sure when you do that you have a jack under the trans when you take off the rear braces haha

Does it make the clunking noise when you take sharp turns at moderate speeds? My rear sway bar joints were busted and it made that noise. Also it might just be a strut/shock. They make clunking noises like that also.
It does make that noise both when I take a sharp right turn or during a straight take off. I noticed that one of the sway bar bushings seemed slightly stretched. I'll check the engine and transmission mounts as well just in case.
Mine was doing it also. Wound up being the trans mount.

Mine is doing the exact same thing right now. I am going to check all the things mentioned here and i'll post what I find out. I was told once that it might be the rear axle... the c clip in the center or something. I don't want to believe that. It does clunk on bumpy streets alllllll the time. So i'm going to check the shocks first. The trans is new so I doubt it could be the trans mount.

You don't need to jack the trans up to check the trans mount. Just crawl under the car and try to push the transmission towards the sky- you don't need to be a muscle man (like me!) to do it
either, if the trans mount is busted, the trans will "pivot" on the motor mounts and move upward quite easily. If you find you can't budge the trans at all, the trans mount is intact.
