No E-brake

Ok, the e-brake on this car never really seemed to work. You could pull the handle all the way up and it wouldn't hold the car worth a dam. I thought maybe it needed adjusting, but my manual says it's self adjusting. (91 Z28) Anyway, I just recently pulled the engine out, rolled the car down and back up the driveway, and now when I pull up the handle, there's not even any tension in it. There used to be tension in it, even when it didn't work. So where do I start looking for the problem? I've looked on the underside of the car and there doesn't seem to be any visual damage to the cable (from what I can tell).

There is an adjustment to it. From the Helm manual: "The adjustment process requires a secind person to apply a light brake pedal load. Lever free-travel is set by the position of the adjuster screw. Turning the adjuster screw cw increases the free-travel, ccw decreases the free-travel." The adjuster screw they describe is a set scres on the opposite side of the caliper housing as the lever that is acted on by the p.b. cable. "Measure the free-travel between the caliper lever and the caliper housing/ It must measure .024" to .028" (0.6mm to 0.7mm). If the free-travel is incorrect, remove the adjuster screw. Clean the adhesive residue from the threads. Coat the thds with adhesive. Screw in the adjuster screw far enough to get the .024" to .028" measurement. Have the assistant release the pedal, then apply it firmly 3 times. Re-check the free-travel measurement and adjust if necessary." I would use the non-permanent style loctite. Also make sure that the pariking brake cable hasn't come free from the guides that hold it against the driveshaft tunnel. If one side or both have come free it won't apply enough pressure to set the brake. Good luck, Lon.
