Stearing Problem......Help
Stearing Problem......Help
Hey guys, i'm new at this, especially w/the suspension part! I have a 92 firebird tbi, i've noticed that i don't get a straight ride when i put my steering wheel straight......it will go to one side, but i mean bad! It'll seem like if i'm changing lanes. I was in a wreck, and they hit me on the drivers sied, right on the quarter panel. Didn't hit the tire though, ever since then, i think it moved my suspension, cuz the driver side spring is rubbing against something. I can hear it, and i checked it out, and i saw where something was scraping. Would u all reccomend a "suspension alignment?" Any info is appreciated, thanx!

The accident could've bent the panhard rod, or any of the bracketry underneath. Having the rear checked out wouldn't be a bad idea.
As to the steering, your idler arm or center-link could be worn out. Those are common "wear items" on our 3rd gens; almost ever third gen should've had theirs replaced by now.

I'm new to this, which one is the idler arm? Center link? Are those expensive to replace? What's a good brand to replace them with? Thanx!

They're easy to find, just look under the car right in front of the engine crossmember. The center link connects the left tie rods to the right tie rods. The center link is "hung from" the pitman arm (driver's side, from steering box), and the idler arm (passenger side). The idler arm's name comes from the fact that it just "idles" there... as opposed to the Pitman arm, which is driven directly by the steering box.
Moog is usually the brand "of choice" for front suspension hard parts. They're made by http://www.federalmogul.com (click on replacement parts us/canada, chassis/moog, electronic catalog, chassis & steering, car type, then choose the part). Put a "MOG-" in front of the part #, then go to http://www.summitracing.com to look up prices.
Er, wait, I just looked at the catalog; they don't list anything for idler arm or center/drag link.. odd. You could call Summit and ask for a price. Or, you might want to have an alignment shop check those parts out and replace them on their own...
