I swapped in a disc brake rearend from an 83 Z28 and I get a loud humming noise which vibrates the whole car when I apply light to medium brake pressure after the brakes heat up. Has anyone experienced this problem? Could it be caused by contaminated brake pads? I checked to make sure nothing was loose so that's not an issue. Any help is appreciated.

Wouldn't warped rotors create a pulsating feel rather than a humming noise though?

Not sure about the humming, just the vibration you mentioned.

Where did you get the rear end from?

 

I was lucky enough to work right down the road from the guys at www.thirdgenparts.com and stopped by to look at some drum brake rearends to replace the broke one I had and then low and behold there was a complete disc brake rearend hiding all the way in the back. They didn't even know it was there. I've never seen such a beautiful thing. I was happier than a pig in shiznit. Only paid $150 for it. Ok back to the vibration, it sounds like a big semi-truck coming to a stop.

The rotors look fine to me. They're not warped or anything. They do need to be turned on the next brake job. The pads still look good. I'm swapping them out for carbon metallic pads to see if that fixes the problem.

If you pulled them out of a parts yard then there is no telling how long they have been sitting there in the heat, let alone how worn they were from the previous owner.

Warped rotors cant always be seen by the naked eye and I don't think grinding them will help either. Might be a good bet to just get new ones.

 

Check the calipers, one or both can be sticking.

 

I thought it was the calipers and I did a complete rebuild on them. They are pulling back off the rotor when releasing the brakes. I finally got my parking brakes to work thanks to the tech article in this web site. My guess would be contaminated brake pads or rotors.

If those are the original pads that were on there when it was laying out in the yard, replace 'em. Turn the rotors while you are at it, and that should solve your noise/vibration troubles....

Mine did the exact same thing after I had gears installed. Turned out it was contaminated brake pads. I'd replace the pads first and see if it clears it up.

Sho be nuff! That's what the problem was, contaminated brake pads. I just finished installing carbon metallic pads and drove it around and the noise stopped. Thanks guys appreciate the help.
