Nasty grinding, crunching, binding noise from front end

When ever I am making a sharp turn at slow speeds (backing out of a driveway while turning sharp to avoid scraping, or manuvering into a parking space), I am hearing and feeling TERRIBLE sounds coming from my front end. I know for a fcat my power steering box is shot, but I dont think it is the problem. Could this be my tie rod ends? The Ball Joints, Idle arm, Pitman arm, and centerlink are all fairly new (1.5yrs at the oldest). The Tie rod ends are the only pieces left that I have not changed to MOOG yet. I have 245/50/ZR16 Kuhmo tires, and I havent had this problem in the past. Thanks guys. Please help me ASAP, the weather Is NASTY and the last thing I need is to not be able to steer!

i bet your frame is cracked where the steering box mounts to it, to check it have someone turn wheels from left to right while you look at the steering box, if it moves around there probabably is cracks behind it. i understand it is a common problem.

I've heard of that happening too. If that is the problem, how can you fix it? Can I cut a piece of steel and patch the section up, or can the cracked piece be welded together? Thanks.

I've mig welded a couple together ...worked good ... could also just be a tire rubbing !! usually just the 82-84 cars crack .. or so I've seen ...

Thsi definately doesnt sound like a tire rubbing, it really sounds like some metal to metal contact is going on.

I have a 91 RS, same problem!

I noticed it about 3 wks ago...only when turning sharply, and only at slow speeds. Ive checked the wheelwell for tire rubbing, no signs of anything being rubbed in there. Mine is a sharp click/pop just after beginning to turn, which I have heard can be related to PS pump. dunno....i may take it in and have it looked at, or you could and tell me what happened...so i can save the bucks. ;-p

not fast....not pretty....but has great potential for both.

I have the same problem, and I'm thinking its the bearings.

I also have bad steering wheel shimmy when I fist start to drive the car. The shimmy will them come and go after being driven for a while, but its the worst when it first gets going for the day.

Any thoughts? Am I correct???

My 91' RS does it too. My car has the factory 16x8s on it and they rub the inner fenders in slow speed turns. I don't have a clue whats makes that awful popping sound.

Your cars seem too new for this, my 83 crunches from worn out A arm bushings. Had the same thing on my 72 RS - solved with new ones pressed in at a shop.

You might want to check the bearings at the top of the struts.

Its your upper strut mounts, mine was doing that until I replaced them. My steering began to bind up, and it became necissary. They are about $85 a piece. I would replace the struts also.

Man this is an old post, lol. The problem was fixed, I dont quite remember the solution though, lol. It wasnt the strut mounts (But I'm buying the HMS Aluminum Mounts now anyway ). I think it must have been my power steering box, which was replaced shortly after this porblem arrose, and I think thats what solved it. I still havent replaced the stupid tie rod ends, lol. I've had them sitting in my house for months, I just keep putting it off....
