Use the engine for chassis bracing?

Hi all

Ive seen race cars use this style chassis plate for mounting the rear of the engine. I was curious if this would have any effect on rigidity or if this would put to much stress on the transmission bolts. If it wouldn't damage the engine wouldn't this be a good way to eliminate the twist on the front end?

Of corse it would have to be isolated somehow to keep engine vibrations out of the chassis and something similar could be done on the front if the block could handle torsional stress.

If you start breaking motor mounts on a regular basis then you need a plate. Until then dont worry about it.

No with a 305 I wouldn't worry about it. Put subframes on the car and call it a day. Those are more for locating the motor and not causing bore distortion under load due to high hp stresses.

Re: Use the engine for chassis bracing?

I think you guys are misunderstanding me. im talking about using 2 flat plates to box the front and rear of the engine for stiffness and handling performance. to keep the strut towers and steering box from moving and to add more torsional rigidity. motorcycle frames use the engine as part of the rigidity of the frames.

No I typed exactly what I meant, it will have little effect at your power level. Perhaps buy a strut tower brace if you want to spend some cash, the 3 point ones are nice.

Re: Use the engine for chassis bracing?

We know what your talking about.Just like it has been said you dont have the hp for that type of appilcation. If you were in the high hp and busting regular motor mounts you would move to solid mounts. Depending on your hp level even solids might start breaking and there is also alot of stress on the sides of the block where there motor mounts attached causing bore distortion and sometimes even cracking the block. Then you would move to motor plates to tie in the motor and have a better mouting point and less flex in the front end from torqueing.

Solid mounts break? really....?

I've seen the sides of blocks torn off aluminum gen 3 motors and the mounts still unharmed. A motor plate is more for high HP vehicles to stop bore distortion at those levels.

I have heard of solids twisting. I also heard of the breaking even thou its far fetched.

Re: Use the engine for chassis bracing?

What im talking about has nothing to do with the engine mounts or breaking or cylinder deformation. There is very little clearance for a carburated strut tower brace and i was thinking of useing something like a front engine plate to substitute possibly a rear one as well to lock the strut towers together

so long as you have solid motor mounts as well, if you have poly or rubber ones, the engine will move, and you may damage the strut towers by tying onto the block. For that matter, the car flexes enough you may damage them anyway

edelbrock makes a carb STB by the way. I have one on my car, slightly modified to work better IMO.Name: mycarcarlisle.jpg

Just a note: The Edelbrock STB won't fit a car with the AC compressor on the driver's side.
