Replacing outer wheel bearing race

I had a wheel bearing go bad... my own fault. I am replacing the bearings and the outer race on the outer bearing (the race on the rotor of the outer bearing) will not come out. The inner outer race came off without much issue, however the lip on the outer one is tiny and it's hard to get any kind of angle on it.

It needs to be replaced, I can see where the metal has changed color due to heat. Am I going to need to cut it out? I can't even see how you can get something to the back side of the race to press it out with a press. With the angle you need to put something on it to pound it out with a hammer being so steep which doesn't leave much force for actually pushing the bearing down and out.

Thanks,
Douglas

I've always used a drift or punch (whatever I had laying around) from the backside and a BFH. If it's welded in there, would it be easier to just pick up a new rotor? I have no experience with trying to cut one out.

My spindle nuts had been tightend down with a wrench or something. the races and bearings where all discolored gold and blue. I used a screwdriver and a hammer to get mine out and it was a pain!

You should be able to get it with a punch and a hammer. I wouldn't try and cut it out, you'll probably damage the rotor and wont be able to install the new race. IIRC, a new rotor with races installed only cost about $60 or less anyways.
Or you could temporarily borrow some parts from one of your 8 other thirdgens.

Re: Replacing outer wheel bearing race

basically what everyone else said. was your bearing tightend up too much? I tighten it tight with a crescent wrench. then loosen it. then by hand tighten the nut as tight as i can. then put the crescent wrench back on and move it just a little to get a cotter pin to line up with the holes. never have any problems.

I do the same thing, but you should turn it back to make the holes for the cotter pin line up.

Re: Replacing outer wheel bearing race

I got it out, finally. I ground the end of a punch at about a 15 or 20 degree angle and then just punched it out from the back. I had to grind it at and angle to get it to stay on the lip of the race. With the punch being at an angle and the tip being flat it would want to slip off too easily.

The nut wasn't too tight from what I could tell. I took it off by hand by putting a socket on it but no wrench.

Oh, and I did steal a rotor off of the 91 Formula as I originally had given up on getting the race out. However, once I got the race off of the "good" rotor I had the technique down so I gave the other one another shot and got the race off.

Thanks for everyone help!

Re: Replacing outer wheel bearing race

When using the used race to install the new race place the thin edge of the used race to the edge of the new race. Hammer only 1/4 of the circumference then knock out the used race and work on the next 1/4. This keeps the entire used race from becoming embedded completely and difficult to remove.
