KYB Strut Install

Well, I have done the search, didn't really find what I wanted to know. I am replacing the stock front struts with a set of KYB adjustable struts. Those of you who have done this, how did you get the nut tightened up, drawn tight? There is nothing to hold onto to keep the shaft from spinning like on the stock struts, the KYB's have the adjustment setting at the top of the shaft. I replaced strut mounts, arm arms, as well but right now I am stuck trying to figure out how to tighten the nut down. Will an impact get it down without being able to hold the shaft? Thanks for any help.

Easy with the impact gun! If you spin and spin the nut, the rod will heat up the seal and damage it.

Use the impact, but only use short, 1 second bursts of air with a few seconds to cool between shots. It will tighten up. Hold the chrome rod with your clean, bare hand if you can reach it.

Re: KYB Strut Install

I just installed these last year. There should be an Alan key hole at the top of the strut shaft. Use that to hold it then use a regular wrench to tighten the nut.

most struts, if not all, have a allen or a small hex, or flats at the end , just above the threads, for you to hold with a different wrench while you tighten the nut.

I just did this last weekend, I tightened the top nuts last with car back on the ground with an impact gun.

Re: KYB Strut Install

Thanks for all the replies, got the job done, well at least the side I was working on. I took my impact got it tightened without spinning the shaft, now I can get a wrench onto top to hold the shaft while do the final tightening. I really didn't think to try the impact since I really thought it would spin too easily, but I loaded the weight of the car onto the suspension to help hold in place. Thanks..
