Hard to steer with wide tires
I did put 275/40ZR17 and Ronal R15 (17x9.5) on my TA all around. It has new bearings and I am waiting to get new steering parts.
When I drive it the steering is really hard, its seems that I am alwais fighting the steering wheel. I have heard other talk about the same experiance after the put big tires at front.
Is there something I can do to make it better (other than getting narrow tires) or should I just get used to it?

Probably has a lot to do with the backspace/offset of the rims.

You can play with the geometry some but whatever you do it's going to be harder than with narrower tires.

{Thinking to myself, wow- how do I respond to this. I can type an easy answer that will be greatly misinterpeted- thats what makes this hard)
So many things can contribute to this hard steering.
Let me just first state the obvious, you are putting wheels and tires on the car that where not engineered for the car. but that might not be your problem.
I will ask you some questions-
When you say "hard to steer", do you mean the steering wheel effort takes alot of muscle to turn? Do you mean the car is hard to control and keep straight? Do you mean it turns too easy but is hard to unturn the wheel to straighten out the car? Are you refering to turning the steering wheel when the car is stopped, whenthe car is going say 30mph? when the car is going say 65mph?
Is the wheel jerky like something is binding as you putsterring effort into the wheel that maybe did not exist with thinner front tires (could be a bad steering box that now is showing wear when more force is applied)
So many potential problem. Could even be worn balljoints and tierods binding and changing steeing imputs and causing the wheels to fight eachother and fight toe settings. Is the front of the car raising or lowering as you go forward compared to reversing and is the effort noticibly changing in the change of directions- could be partially alignment.
More than likely its several problems combined- like worn parts and wrong alignment settings.

It feels like the road is controlling the steering wheel and thats not good (I havent taken the car to some speed yet, just driving undir 25 mph). Joined: Aug 2006
