86 frame in a 92
86 frame in a 92
my brother n law bought a wrecked 92 rs for the motor to put in his car. The only thing wrong with the car is the po hit a light pole with the front right conner and ripped off the a-arm and tweacked the frame. With it being a 25th anv. edition car its worth some money fixed up so i was wonderin if we could take the front right frame rail off our 86 parts car and put it in the 92. Would it work?

if that's your motivation for doing this, you're in for a disappointment. If YOU YOURSELF just really want a car that came with that badge, then yeah; but don't kid yourself that it will make any significant difference in the resale world at large. Unfortunate, but that's the reality. Don't sink a bunch of money into fixing it thinking you'll make a profit, because there's no payoff. It'll just be another wrecked / rebuilt / cobbled-together old car. There's no "frame" in these cars. The thing that the control arm bolts to is the K-member; those are the same from 82-92, so the 86 one will bolt right in.
If anything else is damaged, as it sounds like it probably is, you're looking at alot of cutting and welding, and/or pulling.

well i might as well give it a try. Cause the 86 is all rusted out in the back half so its shot and the 92 is shot if i dont try. And thats nice to know the the k members just bolt right in cause that would have been the hardest part to get the a-arm back on

Third gens are a complete unibody design. Unlike first and second gens, the front frame rails can't be just easily unbolted and replaced. The frame rails are thin metal which is welded to the rest of the body. Just trying to cut off the good front end to graft onto a wrecked car will probably destroy the front end. Consult with a body shop on how much it will cost to straighten the body/frame. My girlfriend had a minor accident in a 2009 Ford Focus when a pickup truck swiped the nose of the car. The car was still driveable. Front frame rails bent, a-pillars bent. The body shop would have cut the front of the car off and replaced it to fix. The insurance company wrote the car off because of how much money it would have cost to fix it.
I'm never going to say it can't be done but for the cost or value of the swap, it's not really worth it. It would be cheaper to buy a front half kit and install that.
