mustang irs transplant?

ok so i posted about it and have found several posts about fabing in a c4 corvette dana 44 into a 3rd gen, then i got to thinking about it and the 1999-2002 mustang cobras have almost the same wheel base as the c4 corvette and our 3rd gens so i was wondering if anyone has tried the mustang IRS or if anyone has any idea how much facing it would take?,considering the mustang has rear seats i can't imagine it would be a lot like a vette IRS is

Re: mustang irs transplant?

I really wanted durabilty and put a rearend from a 2009 GMC 3500 in my 1982. (I had to narrow it a bit)I even added the leaf springs. Some think it wasn't neceesary, but I wanted to be different. The front air dam on my car is 100% bondo so if I choose to change the shape I can. The front suspension is from a 1964 Fairlane. It just bolted right up with a few spotty welds. One of the best bangs for your buck IMO and since most of my friends have mustangs, I can buy rims cheaply off them because the bolt pattern in 5x4.5 now.

That sounds like a pretty sweet setup 1badrz28, do you remember how much you shortened the rear end by? And do you happen to know where the welds were on the front, and do you happen to have pictures of your set up?, thanks again man I'll deffinetly look into those parts

He's probably forgotten where the welds are. I'm sure he bondo'd over them just to make sure it looked super clean. It's a very good way to do it, but the problem you have with that setup is that you have to run GMC truck wheels on the back, and Mustang wheels on the front - they're not really meant to run together like that, sometimes you get harmonic reverberation oscillations throughout the frame from slight differences in how they're supposed to balance. It's a bit of a risk. You might be better off modifying a front suspension from a 3500 if you want to put the 3500 rear suspension is - just make sure you get to one with the independent front suspension. Check Spohn and Hawks, I think there's a kit for it, so it should be pretty easy.
