Add a cross member to help t-5 life????

I just think about this. Spohn offer a crossmember that relocate the tork arm off the transmission to cross member. Leaving the front crossbember and adding a crossmember to the tail of the transmission bolted to the tork arm would fix the problem that all t5 have??? flexy housing??? anybody did this???

From what i have read the T-5 are good its the body that is bad what about boxing the tranny too?

Yes, by relocating the mount of the TA off the trans you relieve the stress that it sees. Helping it live a longer life.

what about my idea of adding a second crossmember attached to the tail of the tranny with tork arm?

Re: Add a cross member to help t-5 life????

the main case is the weak part, not the tail shaft, so a extra crossmember will prove little to nothing.

Gforce makes a upgraded main case for a few hundred bucks and its really the only way to "fix" this issue.

I bought one from UMI...not that I've had any issues, but it can only help.

jegs makes a torque arm that mounts to the tranny hump allowing for any transmission to be used. It is also claimed to give better 60 ft times. I run one with a wct5 and it improved the car considerably IMO

Re: Add a cross member to help t-5 life????

Not sure what all this "add a crossmember" business is all about, since there's nowhere to "add" one, that it would fit.

A more commonsensical thing is to change to a crossmember and torque arm that hooks the TA directly to the xmember.

No it will not make any significant difference to the longevity of the trans.

There's no "adding" a crossmember, but replacing one...it's a torque arm relocation bracket like this:

Looks like a great idea to take stress off the tail shaft of the trans which is why I got one - although it will do nothing about the other stresses that occur (like the input shaft bearing bore issue). Only the aftermarket case could address that.

yeah, but the op seems to be thinging about using something like that, AND adding another crossmember of sorts to try and brace the trans for strength. It wont work, but that the idea here, not just removing the TA from the tail shaft

The flaw is in the case. Engine torque is transmitted through the gear shafts causing the case to flex, allowing the gears to move causing misalignment, which leads to broken cases and gears. The case material, gussets and quality are the problem. Adding outside support will not help, creating a quality case will.

Ahhhh...OK. Well, I don't see how that would work. Maybe I've been lucky, or I just don't abuse mine enough...but it's held up really well, even with the blower installed. I jet bought a relocation bracket for more peace of mind I guess. Plus it's a stupid design IMO to attach the TQ arm to a trans tail shaft in the first place.

Re: Add a cross member to help t-5 life????

another thing that helped me was a steel retainer plate from 5speeds.com. it makes the bottom end of the t5 a bit stronger for only $70 after shipping. It still doesn't save your synchro's from missed shifts, but it does make the factory case stronger with 4-6in lbs back lash. I'm not speaking with authority, just personal experience.

Re: Add a cross member to help t-5 life????

and I run the FP out out of it. I have missed shifts and yes I've had to change synchro,s on that gear, but never hurt the case or cluster gear with over 400ft lbs of trq...knock on wood
