First post here... I have a 86 trans am. Its pretty farm fresh right now but after tune up and cleaning it starts right up. I took it for a little test run and at 55-60mph I could barely keep it between the lines. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Re: uncontrollable

Is it shaking and shimmying or just pulling real hard?
Shaking and shimmying look at wheels and tires and driveshaft/ujoint problems as a start. Pulling I would look at front end alighnment, steering components, and tires.
A little better explaination of what is happening would help us alot. Is steering wheel off center alot? Does steering seem loose? Does the steering whell shake back and forth?

Re: uncontrollable

But before you drive it again jack it up and check for any obvious issues. Anything broken, disconnected, hanging loose? Check the bushes in the lower arms too. They can be worn but should at least be there.

Re: uncontrollable

Sorry I guess I should've been more descriptive... as you're coming up to speed it will start to pull to the right then its like the steering is ultra sensitive like one way or the other and not much in between.... the tires on it are old but they hold air.

Re: uncontrollable

I would check the front end suspension and steering components. It sounds like something in that area and then a front end alignment.
Just a thought but the alignment shops in my area will do a quick check for free so you might consider that.

Re: uncontrollable

If you do get a alignment DON'T USE stock specs (or whatever specs they give you). For good street handling that goes straight, these are good specs:

Camber: -0.5 to -1.00
Caster: 5.0 left side, 5.5 right side (get the right side to the most as you can, and then get the left side 0.5 less than the right side)
Toe: 3/32 toe IN (This is 0.09 total toe)

These specs are very good for street handling, stability and driving straight. You can choose what camber you want but I would suggest in a range of -10.5 to -1.00, depending on how much tire wear you care about vs. how much better you want the car to stick in the turns.. In between at -0.75 is what I ran at but now I'm actually running -1.2 on the street and it handles very good, but I only drive 1000 miles a year on the street so tire wear isn't a great concern for me.
