ok, guys... i have a 88 trans am with 180,000 miles. im going to start with dropping the front....what will cutting 1 coil give me? 1 1/2 coils? anyone cut 2 coils?

i plan on cutting my stock coils.

anyone out there looking at this....if you can tell me your experience on drops with the amount you cut....... i would appreciate it...

i want to cut them once....lol

 

anyone know what a 1/2 coils gives them or a full coil gives them?

 

Previous owner told me he cut 1.5 coils front and .75 coils rear on 25 year old stock IROC springs:

 

If you have the original 24 yr old spring, it will all be a guessing game as to how much yours have sagged meaning 1/2 cut on yours might not be the same as others.

Just be prepared to know that you may hafta cut them more than once to get it where you want it. And remember....You can always take more off but not add back on. So cut midly & don't go straight for big cuts like 1.5 or 2 coils.

 

I have never cut 3rd gen coils, but I can tell you a buddy of mine cut 2 coils off his 91 S-10 4cyl coils and it gave him about a 4" drop-it was on front bump stops.

thanks, ive cut several s10 springs and got about the same. i cut 1 coil on a 62 bel air and i got 3 inches and it rode really good. since im new to 3rd gens i figured i would ask....planning on cutting tonight, but wanted some input before i cut too much...lol

 

MY springs are so old and tired, the car is already bouncy enough without a coil cut off, and it sits lower than stock, but there is still wheel gap. I would be worried about my shocks/struts if I cut a coil off of already tired springs.

bouncy? seems a coil cut off would make it stiffer and if it was bouncyer i would think a new set of struts would take care of it...main goal of this thread for me right now is to see what drops people got with a coil cut off...i guess i could worry about the ride afterwords...

 

im thinking 1 coil cut off would give me 2 or 2 1/2 inches....if it ended up lower i could put rear isolators in to raise it up a little....just trying to gather info from people and see if im in the right ball park...i know that everyones old springs will not be exactly the same but i would think they would be pretty close

 

Something to do with the spring rate and length of the spring, I'm not sure exactly, but I've been told it gets bouncy if you start cutting coils.

 

You were lied to by somebody who just thought it would & didn't have personal experience.

I've done it on multiple 3rd 3rd than were used as daily drivers & even used for Autocross. I had no bounciness & not even complaints about the ride from women.

 

or maybe the guy told him it would be bouncy if he heated the springs to lower it...now that would cause them to be bouncy for sure.

i ended up not cutting the springs last night. im now thinking if i get some moog 5662 springs and cut a coil and a half it would give me the 2.5-3 im looking for. a guy with a white gta on here got those results and im thinking it would be close to exactly the same, since the springs would be new and the drop would be predictable. at 80 bucks a pair i could try it.

i have 215/65/15's and about 3 inches of gap between the tire and the fenderwell. 28" from ground to fenderwell and the tire is about 25 inches tall which would be about the tire hieght i would get in the future when i go 16's or 17's.

i have a case of chevy lean...driver front is an inch lower than the passenger

 

215/65-15's are a little over 26" tall, 245/50-16 are a little over 25.5" tall.

What one coil will do depends on how stiff the stock springs are. Even with the same suspension package in most cases the car could have gotten 3 different springs, and off the top of my head there are something like 9 or 11 different springs that were used on the fronts of these. The softer the spring, the more you have to cut to lower it the same amount. With the stiffest, WS6/Iroc springs you get pretty close to 3" drop with 1 coil removed, and less than half that with the softest v6 springs. All of my 3rd gens have been WS6 cars, and I consistently end up under 26" fender lip height (pretty low) with one coil cut and the rear isolators in the front, the're on the bump stops without he isolators.
