suspension and tire question
suspension and tire question
I have an 86 camaro with the 2.8 fi in it. My question is as follows.
When I bought the car it has spring spacers in the springs to raise the front. The only reason I can think of was to make room for the tires but I don't like it up that high. From what I have seen and read, these tires were an optional size so I don't see why he put the in there. My tires are 235 60 15. I want to keep that size and lower the front by taking out the spacers in the springs. My question finally is if I take the spacers out will the tires rub on the fenders?

Re: suspension and tire question
No. Those are the same size tires I had on the back of my 87 when I bought it (235s on the back and 195/65s front... guess the guy liked it that way?). I put them on the fronts when I had to replace the junk tires that were there (with stock 215/65s) and had no issues.

My struts were just about as wore out as you could possibly imagine (I'm pretty sure they were factory originals with almost 200K on them when I bought the car)... Still no issues with the front tires. Let's put it this way... The tires have a slightly smaller diameter but are almost half an inch wider from the center. The top models use 245-series tires, which do fit (and those are wider still), provided the wheel offset is correct (can't use rear wheels on the front on those).
Re: suspension and tire question
The offset on the wheels are different? I didn't know that. I have been told there the z28 wheels. There the 5 spoked ones. I know there 15s and I think there all 7 wide.

Re: suspension and tire question
The offsets are different on the 16s (on the top models, the Z28/IROC and the TA/GTA)... In the REAR.
Point is that you will be perfectly fine running the 235s on the front...

Re: suspension and tire question
They seem to be 7 wide but couldn't get exact with it still on the car.
From the front of the rim to where the lugnuts go, the front measures roughly 2 7/8 in while the back measures roughly 3 inches in.
Is this correct or do I need to swap the runs from front to back?

Re: suspension and tire question
Ugh... the 15's have the same offset... It's only the 16s that don't. As I said before, the 235s will be FINE on the front. It doesn't matter whether you switch the rims front to back or not, the tires WILL fit.
Only time I ever had a problem with something rubbing one of my tires was when the screw in the front of the passenger's side fender plastic broke out of the hole and the plastic rubbed on the tire because there were no pins in the fender itself to hold it from doing otherwise (fender was screwed up). Even with the 235s in place.

Re: suspension and tire question
I have another question about the back shocks. I have 275 60 15 on the back with air shocks. If I replace them with regular shocks, would there be enough room for them tires or am I better sticking with the air shocks?
