Spindle differences through the years?

Hi folks.

I just bought a spindle to play around with so I wouldn't have to do it on the spindles on my car.

These spindles will be modified in order to install a brake kit. This involves enlarging 2 of the 3 factory holes used to hold the stock rotor dust shield. The spindle I just acquired has different and smaller bosses where the top dust shield hole is. This is undesirable because the edge margin won't be very good once I enlarge the hole. Does anyone know which years have the larger boss like on the clean spindle?

The dirty spindle is supposedly from an '89 but I can't say for sure.

The clean spindle is from unknown year.

Thanks,

John

Yeah, the old one looks like my old '89 spindle.

90-92's have more meat around the holes. I think both of those are 89-older. GM wasn't exacting where they drilled the bosses, i've seen several that are right on the edge. ebmiller is the brake guru on tgo, he says if youre doing an ls1 brake upgrade that you will be fine with the older spindles. For anything bigger he does recommend the 90-92 spindles though.

Thanks Brian, yeah that one sure looks like my dirty one, also an '89. Except you hole is drilled a little closer to the center.

I'm not actually talking about the drilled hole. But rather the casting shape and size of the boss. They are definatley a different casting between the two. The clean one is far superior to the dirty one. I will have to see if I can find a picture of a 90-92 spindle. Thanks.

Thanks Dave. Your picture is interesting b/c your boss looks bigger than my dirty one but smaller than the clean one. I suspect it is the same as the dirty one, just a slightly different angle.

Re: Spindle differences through the years?

I found the info I need. Sometimes Google works better than the thirdgen search. See this thread. Looks like you guys are right, the 90-92 are the ones with the bigger bosses.

Re: Spindle differences through the years?

Does any one know where I can buy spindles? I take it that they don't make new ones any more and mine are wore out.

I'd start with our site's classifieds.

Re: Spindle differences through the years?

Pick and pull down here in lakewood just got an 84 and 91 camaro in during the last week and a 83 firebird so I'll go and check it out to see what parts are left. I'll let you know.
I also know where there is a 90 camaro convertible in a wrecking yard that still had the spindles on it. If your interested in those I'll get you the name and number of the place.
Take care
