Advice on front springs

I have heard that springs should last a lifetime, this may be true? Or maybe not? I have the front end all tore down and am wondering if I should put the old springs back in. Im already spending a bunch of money on this frame up project. My mind says put new springs in but my pocketbook wants to reuse the old ones.

What do you guys think?

Re: Advice on front springs

i tried to find it, but could not. there is a chart on here somewhere listing all the factory springs, with rate, free height and loaded height. You would have to measure what you have and see how they compare to the original specs, see if they have lose free height.

A good spring can last a long time, but will never remain the same forever, especially if use without a properly functioning shock absorber.

New springs are not that much money compared to the cost of a frame off resto, but its up to you. If you are not planning to race the car, and the ride height was acceptable to you before you took the car apart, just clean up and re-use the stock springs.

To add to what Phil said^^^ I would suggest you just put the car back together with the springs you have since you are in the middle of a resto. Once the car is done, drive it and see what you have, then go from there.

You may not be looking at the smae chassis weight when the car is finally finished. See how it sits and rides at that point then go from there. Its a half day to change the springs later on- not the end of the world.

Re: Advice on front springs

I just received a full set of stock replacement springs from summit for my 82 for $144. I thought that was pretty reasonable. Somebody had put lowering springs in, and I didn't care for them, so replaced them.

Summit part #'s
Front- MOG-5610
Back- MOG-5665

Re: Advice on front springs

Thanks for the advice guys. I will kick it around some. If I can get a few extra dollars I will put new ones in.
