To Switch to Manual Steering in a 95% Street 5% drag car... Or to not.. Discuss

Really thinking of going to manual steering in my IROC to free up more room and have less stuff to worry about when finishing up my Twin turbo piping. Already figured out how to re-run the Belt on my LSx motor. Just want to know peoples opions on doing this.

This is a pretty street car with drag car underneath. I've kept full interior (10 point is being installed now) full suspension (even the wonder bar and sway bar is still in the front). Corvette front brakes and 18" wheels. This car would never see twisties except for maybe a on or off ramp but i don't want it to take Arnold to have some street fun in it. Think thats about it...

Oh and this car is going to push over the 1000hp mark with the eventual end goal to be around 1300 to 1400.

Discuss.

If you had skinnies at all times.....I would say yes. I can switch my belt and bypass the power steering for the drag strip. However, with 13" wide street tires on the front, I couldn't imagine trying to make simple turns without the power steering. Not enjoyable.

But....I still drive mine to work occasionally.

ive been driving cars with manual steering daily for the past 4 years. never looked back. its fine when your moving, the only time its a PITA is when your 3-point turning or trying to get into that tight parking spot at low speed. but F it. its free HP, right?

Its actually more of a space thing and trying to figure out a good way to run the PS lines...

Just make the lines the way you would any other part. I made the bracket and lines to run my power steering with up and forward headers. Not really that hard. I even have an extra bracket if you're looking for one.

LOL, your thread title is a bit different from your actual setup.

Normally for a 95% street driven car, I'd say no to ditching power steering. Unless it's something light with narrow tires like a Solstice, Miata, Mini Cooper etc.

Now for your car with twin turbo piping with that kind of power output, I'd say doing ANYTHING to make more room to work under the hood would be beneficial. So yes, switch to manual steering.

I just finish my S10 manual steering box swap and its not that bad I have 2754017 in the front and like daturbosix said if your barely rolling its fine only major difference is the extra turns lock to lock lol

I imagine you went back to power steering from struggling to park.

I drove a Ford Aerostar with a faulty power steering pump and it's a pain in the as& to park.

I would say the biggest downside to going manual is the loss in steering angle, unless you have a custom rack built.
