What the... I can somehow assume these arent coilovers?

Was lowering my car this past weekend and noticed this:

First thing that came to mind are that these are either coilovers (Doubt it) or another cheap way to keep dead or dieing shocks working better.

I tried getting pictures today after work, you can see how it sits in the base.

So what are these?

Cheapo load leveling shocks w/helper springs. Popular in the 80's
Toss 'em and run far away.

They are an "overloader shock".

They were marketed for trucks and full size cars that would be hauling heavy loads, that would cause the rear end to squat.

Can I just remove the springs from the shock itself? Would there be any problems doing so?

Might work... they probably have stiffer dampening rates to dampen both the stock spring and the overload spring on the shock at the same time, but if they're somewhat worn they might end up just right... not a lot of work to try it.
