Help! Drag car suspension & chassis questions

Hey guys, new here and I'm sure you've seen this post before but I figured this is the place to go. I'm building a 87 z-28 drag car for my son. Using a lot of parts that we have lying around, but there are things that need to be bought. Looking to start off with the car running 10.90-11.50 on motor. Looking for some input on what are the smart parts to buy and best trick to do to make the car work the best. Here's a list of what I already have. Car will be track only.

-Complete 87 z-28 bought minus motor & trans
-383 smallblock
-Th350 trans
-12 bolt chevy rear converted for torque arm, 4.11 gears with spool
-Front & rear suspension is stock , but came with new Afco low friction ball joints
- A friend is bending a full chrome-moly cage with rocker bars and bars extending into the engine bay
-Has brand new monroe struts up front ( I hear worn stock ones are better)

Some questions I have are about clearancing the rear wheelwells for 10 inch rims. Where to run the front bars to. Best alignment setup for track use. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Help! Drag car suspension & chassis questions

15x10 rims with 5.5" of backspacing fit with very little clearancing. It depends on how tall the tire is going to be. The most common modification is to cut off the bump stop and plate over that area. It the tire is too tall, the front radius of the wheel well may need to be sectioned out. The 4.10 gears will probably be best with a 28" tall tire. The 28" tall tire should need very little if any clearancing.

Front bars through the firewall are not a necessity unless you really hack up the inner fenders on a third gen and are not required to get an 8.50 certification. I still don't have them on my car. If you're going to install some, the best way to go is to have the tube that comes off the cage, go to the back part of the strut tower then have another tube come off the front of the strut tower and go down the the front of the frame rail.

Best alignment? All 4 wheels square to each other. Zero toe, zero camber and as much caster as you can give it. 4-5* of caster is fine.

Re: Help! Drag car suspension & chassis questions

AlkyIROC, thanks for the help. I'm sure it will come in handy. That's one hell of a car you got there!

If there is anything else I should do or NOT do, everyone please feel free to give your two cents. I want to keep the car with stock style suspension. It seems like you can get lenty of tire under the car. Hoping to run a 28x10.5x15.

Another question I have is about the front end. Snould I run the new monroe struts up front or run a really used set? Are the drag struts worth spending the money on for what he is gong to be running. Also does anyone know if the Ed Quay zero bump steer kit worth picking up? Thanks again
