S10 steering box into my 87 iroc

i want to get rid of power steering in my car mainly because its a complicated mess at the moment and i want to simplify my car even further since i went tpi to carbed, power steering is not a must for me especially since im a big strong dude and have no issues or problems with a manual steering vehicle, and its not my daily driver either, just a cruiser i take on back roads and beat on and take to the strip sometimes, and im not a fan of trying to take tight corners fast either, thats what my 5.0HO 5 speed is for. i was reading that certain s10s in the 80s to early 90s have a steering box that will bolt up direct fit to my car w/using of the camaro pitman arm. thing i am curious about is which years work best? because ive looked online and theres a few different part numbers out there.

84+ S10 manual steering boxes. They will have a 4 bolt top cover and are a direct fit. The early 3 bolt top cover boxes will work but are not a direct replacement and the third gen pitman arm won't fit on them.

Manual steering boxes can only be found in S10/S15's that came with the 2.5L 4 cylinder engine but not all 2.5L trucks had manual steering.

Re: S10 steering box into my 87 iroc

I probably sold at least 50 of them on Ebay. I stopped yanking them a few years ago when the local auto wrecker jacked all the prices up too high, the postal system now charges an arm and a leg for cross border shipping (22 pounds of steel) and the exchange rate has made the profit margin even worse. If I pull one from the junkyard now, I would need to sell it for a minimum of $60 plus shipping just to break even. I used to be able to pull them for $20. Can't compete when they have sold from US sellers on Ebay for around that price including shipping. High end prices on Ebay have gone for $150. Low end $20. Providing your local GM dealer can even get them, brand new they should be somewhere around $300. Maybe a little higher.

When I was selling mine, I pulled the S10 pitman arm off. Washed the box in the hot tank at work and gave it a good coat of paint. I never pulled any that had any play in the gears or shafts.

my best bet is this hillbilly junkyard in the border of my county where all the wrong turn people from our glorious 3 towns started breeding with eachother creating this salvage yard. their business sign is what used to be the stop sign on their side dirt road, but they spray painted over top of it with their logo haha. literally ended up there is a wrong turn at a 3 way stop. they have lots of weird **** tucked around, hopefully i can find an old *** rusty s-10

Re: S10 steering box into my 87 iroc

if ur worried about steering feel. it is firm. but unless u have the arms of a 13yr old girl. it shouldnt really be a bother. i helped install in my friends 85 camaro over the weekend.
drove it with stock wheels. really not much difference changing lanes.
a lil firmer at turns. but otherwise ok. im convinced to run manual on mine now.
i got a hold of a excellent condition box with matching pa

Re: S10 steering box into my 87 iroc

thanks haha yeh i can benchpress a little over 300 pounds, so i should have no issue, finding one in a salvage yard might be an issue, and buying one new without having a core is like 375 bucks, main issue is cant get the aftermarket power steering lines to seal, the factory ones twisted into a giant mess when i took them off, leaks like a bitch, and im interested in the slight weight savings in it too, i have no ac, no heat, nothing like that everything is ripped out, just a summer cruiser, and i wanna get it as light as possible since its setup to race a 70s 442 with over 500 ft lbs and almost 350 horse, but he has 2.56s with muncie m-22 4 speed haha so it should be quite the race.
