Rear end shimmy

Interesting little problem developing. My rear end has a shimmy in it. At certain speeds, types of road, etc. the rear end bounces back and forth. Some places it is VERY noticeable, others it is more subtle. I know the bushings for the panhard bar, and LCAs are shot. Could that be the problem? What else might cause this? Iv been driving the same roads for a long time and this is something that recently started. Any ideas????

thanx in advance.

Re: Rear end shimmy

Of course, if the parts whose job it is to hold something in place are wore out, then they might not be doing their job. Replace those first. I'd suggest replacing the entire LCAs & PHB instead of trying to mess with bushings. I'd also STRONGLY suggest new poly sway bar end links & bushings, and new springs & shocks. Basically replace ALL the worn-out wear parts and see where that leaves you.

Re: Rear end shimmy

Iv been strongly considering getting that Founders Performance rear end kit. What size sway bar bushings should I get for the back (Im guessing for WS6)?

Whatever size your sway bar is... measure it.

Check axle flanges and wheels.

Re: Rear end shimmy

Axle flanges are the same no matter what the sway bar size is.

Wheels are eeeeeeeeeeeezy to change and therefore carry no identification information.

Go directly to the thing you want to measure, and measure the thing you want to know, if you want to know the measurements of something. Otherwise it's a bunch of guessing.

Re: Rear end shimmy

WEll, I think I found my issue, and it aint pretty. My right rear tire has a HUGE bubble in it. I am thinking that is the cause. Put a little air in it (from 35-40 psi) and it made it worse. I am guessing it is that tire.

Re: Rear end shimmy

Well, that's cheeeep and eeeezy then; and of course, something that has to be done from time to time anyway.

Sounds like time for A SET OF tires.

Definitely consider the sway bar pieces, springs, & shocks, as well. The other parts may not make much difference; but replacing those particular routine-maintenance parts can REVOLUTIONIZE a car.

Re: Rear end shimmy

I had a bent axle flange and my wheel wobbled alot. A friend spotted it as I was driving down the road. Good to hear that you found the problem.
