if I am putting in a turbo 350 trans do I have to put the tourqe arm back in the car since I also have a welded rear end? I know that this is supposed to stop the rear end from spinning when you are accelerating.

Welded how? The purpose of the torque arm is to keep the rear axle from rotating forwards and backwards.
You will need to cough up some more information and maybe some pictures if you want us to help you out. Exactly what do you mean by welded rear end?
I made a solid rear axle, all the spider gears are welded together took an open diff and made it an all time locked posi rear end
May I ask what the plans for your car might be.
well humm sometimes i dont even know lol i want to have a street strip car take her to car shows mabie drive on street a little but also take her to a couple drag strips around me and have some fun. but I get the strange feeling that she will become a trailer queen lol
Well good luck with your projects and maybe a few pictures later.
if you go to my photo gallery there are some pics of the car there
and thanks for the support god knows sometimes I need it lol she can be a stubborn girl wasn't very well taken care of so I am giving her a new look on life

Not an expert, but I'd think the car could be unstable in tight corners with a locked rear end. In a corner, the outside wheel should be turning faster than the inside wheel. If that can't happen, I'd think the rear end would be pretty goosey. Just use care in how fast you try to crank around a sharp corner or how soon you try to power out of a corner.
Yea I realized that after we will see how she does and if i have too i have to ill replace the carrier. but for now it works and it will work great on a dragstrip to put power to the ground!
Oh that car will be a trailer queen. If you dont learn more about how the car works, it will be on the back of a roll back or a car trailer.
Yes you have to keep torque arm.
And have fun with that welded rearend. Hope nobody else is around if/when something happens.

Ya know people with that attitude really irritate me. i am young and this is my first attwmpt at a car build ever and no mom and dad didnt buy the car or put a dime into it i bought and am building this car on my own dime .i am learning things and asking questions to find out how stuff works and to make sure i build my car right. There is no need to treat me like an ignorant fool and i don't appreciate it! I realize that the welded rear carrier may not be the most practical solution but it works well enough to drive the car and put her into storage for winter till i have time to work on her next summer and put positrac in the rear end and swap out gears. That's what these forums are suposed to show new ideas and teach.Originally Posted by 3rdgenmaro

I am also taking mechanics classes at collage as well as my major in firescience/ems so yes i do have a lot tolearn that is why i am on here to learn. and to ask questions of the more experianced men and women on this site. now please go pick on someone else if you want to say stuff in that kinda mannr.

It's good that you are learning and continuing your education but you have to remember that a majority of the people on this site have "been there, done that" and have learned what works and what doesn't. The time to ask questions would have been before you welded up the rear end. There could have been a meaningful give and take dialogue where discussion could have been made on the pros and cons of what you wanted to do. Adopting a petulant, sulky, attitude when someone exhibits concern for your safety and the safety of others is not going to get you much help. We are not your parents or any other type of authority symbols in your life. We are your peers in the the admiration and appreciation of a specific breed of automobile. At the end of the day, it's your car and you can do what you want to it, but if you want some help, direction, or information, respect needs to shown in order to be given. Good luck with your ride!
I understand concern but that was more a snotty reply than concern in my eyes anyways. I am only gonna drive her a handful of days outta the year anyways bc of il weather and salt.
Pick on you? ha.
Atleast you asked about the torque arm before you just took it off. You should have asked about welding the already weak rearend. But atleast that is something that you can get away with.
You may want to do a LOT of reading on here. Trust me, 99.99999% of the stuff you can think about doing to your car has already been done. And alot of it has been discussed on here.
If you knew the definition of "ignorant" you would realize that YES you are ignorant. Stupid, no. Ignorant, yes.
Having questions is great, but research it on your own before asking. That way you learn about it, you dont just know the answer.

I am reading a lot and finding it helpful lol galf the time i will post something and then 2 hours later find it in a real old forum. I don't mean to be that repetitive guy but sometimes i am lol oh well cheers !

The torque arm and welded rear end have no bearing on each other. Having a welded rear will not allow you to delete the torque arm.
I believe for the TH350 you need a new tranny X-member to mount the torque arm to, or a kit from someone (B&M maybe?) to allow you to mount the torque arm to the tranny. You can't use the 700R4 hardware to mount the torque arm to a TH350.

they make some rear output housings with the tourque arm mount I found one on ebay that bolts to the trans

A while back I bought an '84 Camaro roller that had been used as a drag car in its previous life and it had a TH350 in it. The torque arm was attached to the transmission cross member with a custom fab L bracket. There were two holes on the top where it attached to the cross member and a couple that mounted the clam shell to the torque arm. I used to have a pic, but I have no idea where it is now unfortunately.
There are cross members out there from a handful of vendors that will do what you need, but it's kind of fun welding one up yourself though in my opinion.

3rdgenmaro, is right. if you can think of it, its on here somewhere. Sometimes a complete answer is spread out over 30, maybe 50 threads but its on here somewhere. Sometimes you'll find a thread titled with your exact question and there will be NO replies. That's always frustrating, but you will find it if you
.
Welcome to TGO! I love this site. I got my 92 when i was 15. I was in your boat for years til i learned to work on my car. There are a lot of very knowledgable and helpful people here. You're in the right place for your 3rd gen.
And so i make sure i say something about the topic of the thread, be careful with that solid axle on the street. I've had a few friends do that too but none of them left it like that for long.

The 700R4 X-member won't work unless you do some sort of mod like jharrison said. At that point, just get a new x-member that moves the torque arm off the tranny. If you ever end up making big horsepower, a torque arm on the tranny is a bad bad plan.
Check the classifieds for a th-350 crossmember and look for one that's a relocation. Or try UMI, BMR, etc, although BMR says you also need their torque arm.
Just my 0.02. I'm installing a TH400 and just got the relocation X-member and new torque arm from BMR.

I have gone through all my photos and I don't have a pic of that torque arm setup. It literally looked like a piece of 1/2" steel that someone cut and bent with a torch and drilled some holes in it. It was not a professional piece by any means and I thru it in the scrap metal pile and sold the torque arm at a swap meet.
Ok I'm gonna order a braket. but i think i might have one off trans I'm getting not for sure gotta ser what I'm getting ill order one otherwise but just want to weigh options on tprqe. arm
Oh well ill order one i spose

Ok,
This has been mentioned above and you most likely know this information but some may not. I will say it and place a link here anyway.
When welded the wheels are always turning at the same speed so when you make a turn of any kind the inside tire is breaking traction and spinning the tread off a little at a time so watch your tires closely because they won’t last. Even making a long banking turn on the highway the inside tire is breaking traction so you really only have one tire making contact and holding the car on the road. Dangerous to those around you so be careful.
Here’s a little video I have found showing how much faster the outside wheel is spinning compared to the inside wheel .
When the time comes here's one way to fix that.

I had a welded rearend in my previous Z28 and had no problem with it and it was my track car every Friday night for three years, never once had a problem and it put the power down just like any locker would. Guys have been doing it since the days of old.
Yea i was told it was one of the cheapest ways to get posi lol

Since this thread got brought back up, this is straight from the NHRA rulebook.
2:11 REAR END Welded spider gear rear ends prohibited in all classes. Four-wheel drive permitted per class requirements. Aftermarket axles and axle- retention device mandatory on Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, and 10.99 or quicker E.T. cars; also mandatory on any car (regardless of class or E.T.) with a spool.
Don't get caught with the welded spiders.

Ok thanks
Im going for track days drag stuff not nhra stuff im not that good and I'm not that interested in sinking the cash or takes to build one of those cars.
Pretty sure they are illegal in all classes in IHRA too.
Just remember, when someone says NHRA, they arent meaning just the highest 3 classes, pro stock, top fuel and funny car.

Just a few things to consider with a welded rear.
Spider gears are a heat treated steel & welding can cause them to be brittle & break.
When this happens... the spiders can split releasing the c-clips, which holds the axle in. Then the axle comes out, which can quickly destroy your quarter panel, not to mention cause a bad accident.
Welding these is a very bad practice, especially on a rear that is already weak to begin with. Personally I would get it out of there as soon as you can. You can find a good used posi rather cheaply... S10 pickups are also a good place to find them, just be sure to get one from a compatible gear ratio.

The same goes for using a spool or mini-spool, you need c-clip eliminators. Also, many tracks, or at least all of the ones that I've been to, use the NHRA rulebook for their house rules. I understand having a budget, I was once a broke college kid, we're just trying to explain the many reasons this is a bad idea.
