whats the widest tire i can put on stok rims

just wondering looking for a set now but i want to go a little wider in the back
seriouse traction problems

If it's just for drag racing, you can go up at least a couple of sizes. For good road handling, maybe just one size. For instance, on the stock 15x7 Z28 rims, you can go to 235/60 and still have the same diameter and the sidewalls won't be bulging excessively.

Since you list an 87 GTA in your sig, I'll assume you are talking about 16" x 8" wheels.

I would say anythig over 255/50/16 is excessve.
Larger will be wedge shaped on the sidewalls and curve the tread reducing traction.
