Difference in WS6
Difference in WS6
I am curious if there is a difference between the WS6 suspension and the Y 99 in an 86 Trans Am. I bought an 86 Trans Am with 4-wheel disc brakes with no rims and put 85 WS6 rims on the car. Throw a front left Rim rubs. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried to Google but I don't think I'm asking the right questions.

Re: Difference in WS6
The suspension is identical in every way.
They may have used different springs, shocks/struts, or sway bars; but that's about like saying 2 motors are "different" because one has Marathon gas in the tank and the other has BP, or that 2 houses with the same floor plan and whatever else are "different" because one is painted white and the other yellow. Those are just the "soft" parts.
But yes, the wheels are different from front to rear, in most if not all of the 16" options on these cars. Specifically, different offset. Doesn't have anything to do with the "W" buzzword RPO. So you may have the problem of putting a rear wheel onto the front of a car, which might cause issues.

Re: Difference in WS6
Look on the back of the wheels. Factory 16" wheels are marked front/rear, if you put a rear on the front they rub. Fronts fit on all four corners.
The WS6 package is mostly a marketing term. It means slightly different things in different years. On 86-92 Firebirds, WS6 adds the FE2 level 3 suspension. FE2 generally includes 16" wheels and 245/50R16 tires. A 86-up Trans Am without WS6 generally would have 15" wheels, or narrower tires in the later years. Considering that WS6 is standard equipment on 87-92 Formulas, and GTAs, it was only an option on the Trans Am. So when you've got an 86-92 Trans Am without WS6, it's usually an indicator of a car that wasn't packed with performance options. Marketing aside, it's a real world difference in driving experience akin to driving a nicely equipped Iroc or Z28 next to the secretary's RS.
