Steering problem, any ideas????
Hey whats going on. Now I know this is really hard to diagnose this problem without actually driving the car but any suggestions to check would be greatly appreciated,
Ok, I got an 89 which when I turn left full turn, it feels almost like the drivers wheel is buckeling or not exactly straight, a really weird feeling. its sort of a difficult thing to describe but I would think its a simmilar feel to turning on a flat tire. I know its no the rim because it does the same thing when I swapped rims a little while ago. Any ideas??
I know I should get it check out but the car is in storage right now so its not going to happen untill the spring

It can only be a couple of things.. My Z28 was doing the same thing, it would seem like it was "swaying" when you turned.. I went and got the bearings packed. Then I replaced the Idler arm, Ball joints, and it still did it. The last thing I switched was the steering gear box, and it fixed it in no time. Just look for a used one. I got mine for like 45.00 and its awesome!

I would like more info on your car. Year, miles, etc.
This is sometimes caused by failure of the front subframe at the steering box attachment point. Or movement of this area while turning.
I had the same problem that you have until I installed a "wonderbar". The "wonderbar" connects the left and right front subframes together.

The car is an 89 RS with just under 140,000 KM on the clock. As far as I know the suspensions/steering components are all original with the exception of shocks and Idler arms.
So One of you guys thought it might be the steering box. Now that I think about it the steering is fairly "loose" but keep in mind I am use to driving a 91 suzuki swift with only "power assist" steering.
How hard is it to change the steering box and by changing this will it stiffen up my turning if I get a certain box or some other steering component, because I like it a little bit stiffer than what it is

Carefully examine the area where the steering box attahes to the frame for any signs of cracking. Then install a wonder bar. I don't know the GM part # but someone will post it for you I'm sure. They came on all IROCs, and they are also available aftermarket.
