Needing to know size of wheel studs.
Needing to know size of wheel studs.
I’m needing to put long wheel studs on my 1982 Camaro Z28. Only problem being, I don’t know what the rear end is from. It has a 5x5 bolt pattern which doesn’t come on these Camaro’s but the factory lug nuts do thread on. What size wheel studs do I order and what knurl do I need? Thanks in advance.

The rear end is from a Camaro or Firebird; of that you may be 100% guaranteed ironclad take it to the bank POSITIVE. Near 100% likely to be 82-92. They are like virtually ALL GM cars for as long as I've known GM cars (which goes back to the 50s); the bolt pattern is 5 on 4.76", commonly known as 5 on 4¾. Unless of course it has some aftermarket something in it like somebody's Frod 9" to fit one of these cars.
According to rockauto,
12mm-1.50 Studs; with 12.73mm Knurl; 41.5mm Length

If it's a different axle you're probably going to want to knock a stud out to measure the knurl before you just start throwing money at replacements.

As far as money, they're about 4 for $1 in boxes of like 25, for stock replacements.

I think you are measuring from the outside of a stud to the outside of the other, probably why you came up with 5 inch BP, you need to measure outside of one stud to the center of the other.

Re: Needing to know size of wheel studs.
Maybe d00d should just get a 5 on 5 wheel and see if it fits; then if it does, he knows FOR SURE it's not stock, and just knock out a stud and measure it. Posting crap on the Internet is a complete waste of time on his part, when the only way any of us out here could POSSIBLY tell him what he's got, if it's not stock, is to do just exactly that.
Re: Needing to know size of wheel studs.
Anyone answering on here commenting about the fact that my bolt pattern is 5x5 obviously needs to re read my question. I know 100% that I have a 5x5 bolt pattern because I already have gone through the situation of trying at 5x4.75 wheel and having it not fit and I have already ordered and received my 5x5 bolt pattern wheels and have installed them so putting that aside and getting back to what I actually asked, is that my only option? To knock out a stud? I was hoping to not go that root before ordering the studs themselves.

Anyone asking the same question over and over again without GETTING IT obviously needs to re-read the answers.
NOBODY OUT HERE is going to somehow mysteriously magically telepathically know what studs whoever built your rear axle used. All we know, and even THAT only after however many times you've asked and we all keep saying "if it's stock it's this size", is that it's NOT STOCK. That's all we know. We don't even know what kind of axle it even IS. Which letter of NOBODY needs further explanation?
Odds are, the threads are ½"-20. OTOH, saying that "Odds are" is AHELLUVA long way from "go buy studs that size". And of course, there's at least 15 or 18 different knurl diameters for lugs with that thread... there are 185 listings in the Dorman catalog for studs with that thread, of all manner of head styles, knurl dia, length, and whatever all other variations. We CANNOT know without doing EXACTLY the same thing that YOU have to do.
Knock one out and measure it. About 2 gentle bonks with a BFH, DONE. You've already spent like 5 times as much time and effort posting on the Internet, as it would take to JUST DO IT.
Feel free (or at least real cheeeeeep) to come back and let us know what you found.

Which letter of NOBODY is giving you trouble? I'm not sure I can explain this any better. As I said up there, odds are, the studs are ½" thread, that being the most common size for the 5 on 5 pattern; so I looked up in my Excel copy of the Dorman catalog (yes it's available) and there are 185 part #s for studs of that size in there. 185. And that's just Dorman, which is only stock replacements... how many more might there be in various racing or other specialty mfrs' product lines?
You're just gonna have to do a little work yourself.

You had this attitude with your answer like I was just some dumb *** and how dare I even ask a question. I don’t know much about some of this stuff. A simple answer would’ve sufficed instead of giving off this holier than thou attitude. No need for that. Could’ve just been a nice conversation. But that’s in the past. Moving on. Now knowing I need to knock a stud out, how do I measure the knurl and will it be an issue installing long studs with drum brakes or do I need to remove the axle to do so?

You measure the knurl with a caliper. You'll need to know both its length and diameter. Whether you can do that with the axle installed depends on how long of a stud you need, and how much bigger the knurl is than the threads (which will determine how much of an angle the stud can go through the hole at). Nobody out here can tell you that, since we STILL don't know what axle you have, OR what length of stud you want to put in; and even with that, it would be very difficult to know for certain. I do know however, stock length ones will go into stock axles in a stock rear for one of these cars with drum brakes, without any trouble; so it's not impossible that you might get lucky.
