Hawks 10:1 steering box

Have tried searching all the forums for real world recommendations. Everything that I found was years old. Some of the companies in the threads are no longer even in business. Did AGR clear up their quality control issues? Is Lee's in SoCal gone?

This seemed like the least expensive option to a 10:1 box https://www.hawksmotorsports.com/82-...-1-fast-ratio/

This is for a race only RR and track days. Could care less about parking and low speed effort. ( may have to take two tries to get into your pit spot)

Somebody stop me from ordering a box from Turn One!!!!!

Get the 8:1 box from Turnone

I am fairly sure Lees is still around, I think IROCZman15 just had his box done there

You could also look at Sweet Manufacturing. Although I haven't driven mine yet it is a nice unit that should be similar to Turn One without the extra cost.

Re: Hawks 10:1 steering box

I purchased 206-12220 (12:1 700 SERIES SPORTSMAN STRG BOX w / .220 VALVE). I will use this for street driving but they can make anything you want for the same basic price. I wanted to go with Turn One but they were always on back order and were 2 times the cost. Sweet Manufacturing had just as many positive reviews and parts list looked similar.

Not saying it isn't a good box , I'm truly hoping it is , but at half the price of the Turn One the decision of whether I consider buying one will rest on your (hopefully) positive review of it once you start driving it .

Very true. I tried to buy a turnone box twice, both times ended up getting my money refunded after they could not get past a lengthy backorder. I had to call and ask repeatedly before they refunded me. I'm sure it's a legit unit, I just couldnt get one. Talking with Sweet over the phone I had a high degree of confidence that this would perform as well as the turn one unit. For my needs anyways.

Re: Hawks 10:1 steering box

In January 2020, I sent my oem IROC box to www.powersteering.com and they did a full disassemble, parts assessment, rebuild, paint, and test of my box for about $300 shipped. I had considered a new aftermarket box, but I liked the idea of bringing new life to me oem box that has worked very well in this exact car for 175,000 miles and 33 years. it turned out great. works very well. The car has been used (and will continue to be used) for autocross, street driving, short course road course, drag racing, etc. They did a great job.

- next, I would like to replace/rebuild my power steering pump. I repainted it this winter during my engine project and it is sadly one of very few "less polished/new items" under the hood, so even though it works, I might end up replacing it or having it redone. I prefer the look of a new fancy one, but thats because the pump/tank/pulley is more visible than the steering box. so, i'll see. maybe if I can work some extra hours and get the money for a nice fancy/fresh one, with accompanying mid-mount bracket and aluminum V belt pulley .

Turn One isn't just a steering box.... they give you a Delphi 600 steering box.

Re: Hawks 10:1 steering box

You know us racers, always so easily seduced by shiny things. I do so want to order the best part available. With any project with an off the books limited budget you just want to make sure you are sharpening the right part of the spear. The best box is only as good as the worst/ loosest part in the system

Is the Delphi 600 box worth it ?

I had my box done by powersteering.com last year, what a huge difference and it's nice to have my original box and it is fast ratio from GM when car was built. The steering is very responsive, quiet, and with the DSE steering shaft, car steers great with no wandering. They are a great company and offer a great warranty as well. I bought a box store box unit, it was worse than my old worn out stock box. At least with your own box you know it is going to fit without any issues!!

Re: Hawks 10:1 steering box

The Hawks 10:1 box is 100% TRASHIt's not even a real 10:1 box.
it's a 12.7:1 box with extended internal steering stops.
There's been a few people they used them and they were downright dangerous.
The box would randomly jerk the car around by itself.
or 1/2 a turn of the wheel would do nothing.
Then the next 1/4 turn would go full lock.

I recommend a Redhead Box if you have a street car. I've been to their shop before and talked with all the mechanics everyone there is pretty chill.
you will have to call them as 3rd gen boxes arn't listed on their website, although they have them in stock.
I was told by Turn-1(3-4 mts ago) that their suppliers for boxes was lost. NASCAR went to rack and pinions so the people making parts and cases stopped.
No supply=no custom boxes.
I need to call them again and see what the decided to do.

AGR custom build unit. from one of there older units..had to send it in to them. has the standard GM kit did not have all the parts that AGR has..

Don't know if they make the trick Billet caps any more..as this was a older unit I had gold Zink plated before sending it to AGR for them to put it back together test. and sent back to me.

Re: Hawks 10:1 steering box

The Hawks is a rebuilt Lares... they also sell new ones...
Not listed in any description I saw, but the tech at Lares I spoke to said they are variable...
10 in the middle then 12-13 the more you turn...

I'm leaning towards the Lee 9:1 box, it's a stock 800 series box with work done to case for upgraded 3 bearing kit (vs stock 1 beargin), billet caps, etc.... It's pricey though, just above $1200.
