Steering gear box leaking

I have an 85 T/A and the input shaft seal on the steering gearbox has started leaking. I'm wondering if its possible to just replace that seal instead rebuilding the entire thing for now?
I have alot left to do on the car and really don't want to add a full steering gearbox rebuild to my list at this time.

Yes you can get a seal kit from rockauto, apparently there are 2 different steering boxes available on these cars so I would order both of them so you aren't waiting for parts like I had to. I scribed a mark on large locknut before loosening and removing it so I could set it back the way it was and not overtighten it, I used a large punch and hammer to start getting it loose since it was installed in car and not easy to get large wrench in there. Pretty easy to do as long as you make sure to remember how the pieces come out and put them back the same way.

Thanks 2knight! Did you use the punch on the outer ring with the tabs or the inner one with the two holes? And did the end piece come off without parts falling out inside the gear box(e.g. ball bearings and such)?

Re: Steering gear box leaking

I found a couple video's on YouTube helpfull- the input seal looks to be fairly easy compared to complete O/H

Yep pretty easy. I was intimidated before I did this too. Use the punch to loosen big locknut then used small screwdrivers to loosen the one with 2 holes in it. No ball bearings or anything else fell out. Like I said make sure to scribe a mark somehow to get the same preload on it and make sure to lube seal & oring to prevent it from getting cut. You can do this!
