alright guys im getting pretty stumped. i have a bind in the steering when you turn the wheel either way about 1/2 turn. i have a rebuilt column, new lower steering column bearing, new astro/ jeep steering shaft, new lees 670 gear box, new drag link, new inner tie rods, outter bump stop kit, new idler arm, new control arms, new koni struts, TDS wonder bar. car has been aligned by a really well known local alignment guy (same guy that aligned the hoonigan camaro and all their cars). weird thing is it doesnt do it all the time. ive checked for anything physically binding and or rubbing but do not see anything unusual. also i can feel it with the car jacked up and suspension drooping. any thoughts or suggestions on what it might be are greatly appreciated. it gets a little sketchy driving sometimes on the freeway.
hmm i have honestly never heard of that. i know i di have my bro look around as i was moving the wheel and catching when the bind would happen. he said it sounded and felt like it was right at the bottom the steering column by the top U-joint of the steering shaft. that is why i replaced the bearing cause i thought that was it (well it was also bad). i will have to look at the shaft and see if i can orientate it a different way. thanx for the video.
so i decided to try and find a pic of the shaft when i got it and looks like joints are lined up incorrectly. now i guess i will have to see if i can fix that.
weird thing is im looking at other shafts like the walter racecraft and others and the u joints are set up the same way mine is.
Is the center link installed correctly?
the inner tie rod castle nuts face the front of the car.
If you stick your head under the bumper, the castle nuts should be facing you.
pic isn't my car, but shows the correct center link orientation.
Of that's not it, most Moog and newer AC Delco idler arms are wrong for our cars.
so you guys are goin to laugh on what was causing the binding. was a little slow at work so i took the steering shaft off, cut it, rotated it, re-welded it and braced where i cut and welded. was still binding. while driving it home for some reason i was looking at the steering wheel and noticed that when it started to bind the top of the column cover would raise up. well now since the steering wheel was off center from rotating the the shaft, i pulled the wheel off and noticed these 2 little bumps on the clock spring were catching on these 2 tabs things on the top of the inside of the column cover. cut off the tab things and re-centered the steering wheel and took for a test drive. no more freakin binding now.

Make sure the inner tie rod is centered and the rod end on the bump steer kit is also centered.(at ride height).
Rod ends will make a weird pop when pushed out of their alignment range
