Engine cradle

Hi everybody. Should anybody tell me how to lift down the engine cradle? Seems there's only 4 bolts to tighten but wondering if nuts are used in the frame? Thanks for your help.

Re: Engine cradle

Don't worry, I already know. I took mine out once.

6 bolts. 4 long and 2 short. Plus a whole lot of other misc stuff like engine mounts, various suspension parts, brake lines, and so on.

Re: Engine cradle

It's very easy to remove when everything is stripped off of it. As sofa mentioned there are 6 bolts. Technically 8 with the triangle braces, but those can be removed ahead of time.

Re: Engine cradle

Pretty sure alot of these cars didn't even come with those braces at all.

They're one of those things that make a just barely noticeable difference. Worth having in spite of their weight in a terrible place.

Re: Engine cradle

My 82 TA didn't have any of the braces. It was missing the 2 triangular ones and the one by the outside of the frame rail by the steering box bolt heads. All the bolt holes were there and tapped for the braces. I found them all on eBay or like $25. They even came w the bolts. It's totally worth having them all. These cars could use all the stiffening they can get.

Re: Engine cradle

Taking advantage of the triangles and springs disassembled, I will drop the motor cradle. To support the engine, I thought to support it from above but I don't know where to ink the chain? Can a strut under the oil pan be sufficient?

Bolt holes in the ends of the heads are a great place, using bolts of the right length such that they can tighten all the way up. A carb pad bracket is even easier. Something kinda like https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g1015-1.

Yes, as far as that goes; but it'll be HORRIBLY in the way.

Re: Engine cradle

In the future, I cut a 2x4 the length of the space between the fenders, strapped a couple of ratchet straps to the front of the cylinder heads, and I was able to lift the engine off the eventually to install a new K and suspension. It was surprisingly not in the way, and a single strap could have held it, but I liked the security of 2 straps in case one let go

Re: Engine cradle

Woah TX50, you gotta lota faith in that red stand holding the engine! What happens to the springs as you pull the engine cradle down? Or did you already have those out?

Looks like you were missing the "]" on the end of the link. Here you go...

I just had to drop the front sub frame on my wife's P.O.S. POL-sha Cayenne and I did a similar thing to ^that^, but used the rafters in my garage with a spreader bar to spread the load over several beams. I used a sling around the harmonic damper. Worked good.

I did remove them before dropping down the engine cradle with an inside spring compressor, Bought 30$, but very efficient!!! I've been kindly surprised of this tool. Next step is to powder coating all parts and put them back to place. Pictures following asap
