Make sure you have the engine on the lifter and support the trans before removing the bellhousing bolts

Given the mechanical " experience" of some members on here is best to mention the obvious

My turn!

1) Support the transmission with a piece of wood laid across the jack - this will help distribute the weight.

2) Remove the dust cover and take out the 3 bolts on the torque converter

3) Remove the engine/tranny bolts (make sure all the linkages on the carb/tbi/tpi are removed

4) Lift engine out

Re: Need help removing engine from transmission.

I would pull both and seperate after I got them out. Much easier to pull and install both together. Look at the bell housing bolts with the engine in the car and picture getting your extra long extension and 9/16 socket up there to take them out VS taking them out with it sitting on the ground in front of you. The torque converter bolts (3 of them) are 11/16 if memory serves. If you leave the trans in the car then there is an old trick to take a wire hanger and run through the bell housing bolt holes ( the top two) and then wire the trans up out of the way.

Take them both out at once, saves you tons of time and effort.

Re: Need help removing engine from transmission.

Coming from a guy with a lot Mustang experience (me), pull them both together. The amount of difficulties pulling my 3.1 and shoving a 5.4 into an 01 GT, pull and replace them as a connected unit.
