Go to shock/strut setup in 2026?

Hey all, hope everyone is doing well. Getting the 88 formula back in shape and I have my eyes on some new struts/shocks. Back in 2017 I replaced the entire suspension front/rear. However I cheaped out on some low end KYB shocks/struts (bad idea). Ready to replace them get this thing driving better. I remember Koni Yellows were the way to go back in the day for a good purchase. Are they still around and a top choice? What is everyone running?

I'm looking for a tight drive feel, but with some comfortability. Adjustability is not required, but a nice additive. I'm on Eibach Pro Kit springs, & UMI strut mounts. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and information!

Koni Yellows are still the go to. There are also qa1 shocks and struts or the KYB adjustables that work well.

Re: Go to shock/strut setup in 2026?

I think we can safely conclude, with these being vintage antique cars and the struts fitting ONLY these cars and the market being low-volume and VERY price-sensitive for the most part, that further invention and "innovation" in that department is unlikely at best. Unfortunate; butt hay, It Is What It Is.

The aftermarket just doesn't give a crap about 3rd gen Camaros or Firebirds.

If you want aftermarket support get a 1986/1987 Turbo Buick, Fox body Mustang, or a Truck. You can get all the aftermarket support you want for those.

Koni Yellow Sport shocks and struts are the go to.

They handle and ride great on a Firebird that has the UMI catalog thrown at it with their lowering springs too and Hawks 17x9 diamond-spoke wheels with 275/40 17 tires. I live in a place were the roads are as smooth as the slate on a high end pool table. I have no idea how well they will eat potholes that can swallow an entire car like states that have roads like a bombed out airfield in a warzone. I'm looking at you Tennessee.

Re: Go to shock/strut setup in 2026?

Thanks all! Looks like Summit has the Koni Yellows on sale right now. Going to grab them! I do have a slew of other UMI items from subframe connectors, rear control arms, etc. Hoping they'll make a great addition to the ride!

Anyone with some first handle knowledge on the Koni's regarding what level they ride at regarding the adjustability?

Re: Go to shock/strut setup in 2026?

On the rear you can use the Koni Yellow Sport shocks for the 3rd gen or the 4th gen. 3rd gen is off-car adjustable with 3 settings and the 4th gen is on-car adjustable with 4 settings.

The Firebird I was talking about had the 3rd gen off-car 3-way adjustable shocks set to their middle setting and the front struts set to 3 out of the 1 to 10 setting on the softer side of the adjustment. As best I can remember.

EDIT: I sent you a PM. I just remembered I might still have a front and rear set of these for a 3rd gen new in the box for a project car that has been sold. I'll check the shop tomorrow. If I do still have them I can send you detailed pictures of them. As long as shipping isn't nuts I could probably save you around a couple hundred bucks and put that money toward a new set of tires I need for another car I'm working on.

I moved everything to the Classifieds so as not to clutter up the OP's thread with a bunch of pictures.

If he’s not buying I would be interested and I think I live close enough to you to save on shipping.

The oddball yellow color on some of the pictures is just the camera. All are the dark rich yellow color.

Thank you for the offer Airwolfe, but I had made an order with Summit that night and the parts are already to be delivered tomorrow! Gold&Blue, they are all yours!
