Having a hell of a time with the spring compressor

My Tokico suspension kit came in and I thought I try to install it tonite. I went to Checker and rented a spring compressor. Is there some trick I am missing using this thing?? First of all to try and keep the hooks on a coil and tighten it is very trying of ones patience. Then when I think I have it on pretty good I find the damn thing sticks out too far on an end so it wont fit in the perch. Any of you guys have some tips or tricks for me before I get anymore pissed?

Thanks

I had same problem. The screw is to long for our cars. So I broke down and bought one and cut about three to four inches off the end of the screw.

I did the same thing when and bought a crapy on for 15 bucks and cut a little off the top. Make sure you stick it up inside the spring and measure how much to take off the top before you cut it. To keep the arms of the compressor in place I wraped tape around them you may only beable to do this on the bottom I don't remember, but the bottom are the ones that give you the most trouble.

When I installed my Eibach's I didn't even use a spring compressor. On the front I pulled down the lower control arm as far as it would go and yanked the old spring out. Since the new springs were shorter they slid right in.

I had my springs out a week ago to replace the A-arm bushings, and it was a huge pain in the ***. I dont know if this is stock, but there was a hole ~3/8" in the cup of the spring perch, and it was located perfectly to slide the screw of the compressor into to install the spring. Not sure if this was stock, or a previous owner did it, but in any case, the hole was about a half inch off center towards the outside of the car, in case someone wants to drill their own.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't have the engine in the car so I don't have any weight in the front which is probably not helping my sistuation any.

I had to cut about 2 1/2" off the screw and use a piece of pipe as a spacer to get the spring compressor to work right in order to remove the spring. It wasn't necessary for installation.
