Changing Rear Disc Brakes.

Ok,

I have been kicking around this in my head for awhile and I know I have to do it sometime...

How hard is it to remove the rear disc brake pads on my Camaro? I need to replace the rear pads because to the best of my knowledge they have never been replaced. I have been told that changing the rear brakes is a nightmare and requires special tools...something to do with the E-Brake and all that? Oh yeah, my E-Brake is stuck as well...will not pull up on the handle.

I haven't tackled this project yet but I would like to get some guidance before I start.

Thanks

... that's probably 'cause it is sort of a pain to do.

Do a search regarding the rear disc TSB on the early 3rd gen rear discs (pre '88).

The pistons would get stuck in the bores, the e-brake ratchet mechanism is a b!tch and they can be a pain to remove just 'cause of rust and lack of use.

I don't think the pistons are stuck

Cuz I know my rear brakes work fine.... guess I will have to just pull the wheel and roll up my sleeves

The Haynes 82-92 Camaro (or 82-92 Firebird) manual gives you the exact details needed to replace your rear pads. You will need to remove the rearmost lower control arm bolt on the passenger side, because otherwise, you can't get one of the rear caliper mounting bolts out. Spray all your lines down with penetrant for a few weeks before doing the job. You actually have to disconnect the brake line for the driver's side rear, there's no hose on that caliper. If the fitting rusts to the brake line, as you turn the fitting to loosen it, it'll turn the tubing, and snap the tubing off. Pep Boys sells replacement tubing, but you'll have to bend it yourself. (I bought a $3 bender from Pep Boys.) The tubing you'd want for your '87 would have metric fittings, and in Pep Boys' rack, they're labeled as being for Foreign cars, and the fittings are color-coded blue.

Unless you have relocation brackets.

Oh, so you want to play That way, eh? Well, I can change all my plugs easily with just a ratchet, 8" extension, and spark plug socket from the TOP of my V6 engine bay! So There!

(Yeah, yeah, I know, lame...)

Probably not as easily as I can change all 8 of my plugs from the top with just a spark plug socket and a wrench.

Well, I only have to change 6 plugs instead of 8!
