Size of stock IROC sway bars?
I have been searching the boards and what factory literature I have for my car (*see sig. for info about it) and I just want to know the size of my sway bars. I have been told I should have the biggest avail. 36mm in front and 24mm in back but I am not sure. I am wanting to order bushings for my whole car and from what I have read we need to specify our sway bar size since they get it wrong alot. Could someone please help me out?
Thanks!

Well, if you don't have calipers, you can do the "poor college student's
" trick- tighten an open-ended adjustable wrench down on the center of your sway bars. Then remove the wrench, and measure the gap of the jaws with a ruler. You might not want to start from "0" of the ruler, in case the edge of the ruler is worn out. Start measuring from 10mm on the ruler.
TIP for anyone else reading this that wants an IROC bar: When I go to the junkyards, I always tighten an adjustable wrench down on my front sway bar. (I don't want to bring my calipers inside the yard, they'll think I'm rich.) Then, everytime I see an F-body, I pop the wrench over the front bar to see if I can find one larger than mine. That way I don't have to look for any WS6 codes, or waste time measuring each bar.

Hi Tom, I have read that post a million times when doing a search and the results it comes up with. I have tried 3 GM dealerships for this info, they are clueless. I have done about 10 searches here on thirdgen.org and can not find anything. Is this information just so obscure that no one knows for sure? I guess I will go buy myself some calipers to measure mine.

Some Firebirds had the 36mm/24mm combo from 86-92; some Camaros had it from 89-92 (for example my 85 IROC had a solid 34mm/24mm combo).
By the way, the 36 mm is hollow, so simply look for the holes, one at each end of the bar's underside near the end links. Also, every 36 mm I've seen is painted/power-coated black. Should anyone be looking, I have a complete set and a front only in the classifieds.

Hey Tom, I have not tried it yet. A friend of mine who works a auto parts store is going to borrow a set of calipers to measure it and get the correct measure on it. I will post what we find tommorow.

Cool! Let us know what you find. I paid $30 for my dial calipers; yeah, they're not Starret, or Mitutoyo, but I figure they're better than a $15 set!

Stock IROCs come with 32mm, 34mm, or 36mm front sway bars, and 21mm, 23mm, or 24mm rear sway bars. Your car can have any of those. There's no way for us to know over the internet. You have to measure it yourself.

I went and saw Travis last night and we verified the sway bar size with calipers... 36mm front and 24mm rear. I have decided on getting the Pro-Kit Springs instead of the Sport Lines. Hey RSpeed, I took Travis for a ride in my car and now he hopes his transmission goes out soon so he has an excuse to get one like mine..
He can testify to my 10ft 1st -> 2nd gear tire scratch!! I am going to start ordering my stuff for my suspension today! I will keep every one updated. Thanks for everyone's help.

First of all, I take it that the 36 is better than the solid 34 right. How much difference in handling is there between the 2? Second why would he have to wait for his tranny to go out. Why couldnt he just do the stuff to his?

Hey Momar, as far as the reason to replace the trans, since his has not gone out yet there is not a strong since of "purpose" to replace it yet. AS far as the 36mm hollow bar vs the solid 34mm bar, I am not sure how big of a difference there is. My whole suspension is just shot after 150K+ miles on it. I have no way to compare the two, do a search on the boards and you will probably find someone to give you a definite conclusion on the two.
