Steering shaft wiggles?

I was just outside giving my car a little "once-over", just to see if everything looks ok, and I noticed something that I haven't seen before. I grabbed the steering shaft and tried to wiggle it from side to side, and it freakin wiggled, I thought it was supposed to be a very solid connection? When I grab the part where the metal is showing (after the linkage from the steering column), and try to move it, the link between the Steering Column and the linkage moves around. There is a metal clip that looks like it hold some kind of cover for it on there, but I'm nto sure whats gonna happen when I remove the clip? Is this behaviour normal or is there something wrong? Could this be part of my wandering problem, becuase it sure seems like this could be part of the cause. Thanks!
