An off the shelf chip will MAYBE net you a few HP, certainly not what the advertisements say.

Don't worry about custom chips until you start replacing the heads/cam. Then I suggest you dig through the archives here and learn about making your own chips. Thats what I plan to do.

save your money. off the shelf chips are a waste of time.
go to the tech articles and do the DIY afpr and turn up the fuel presure slightly then advance you timing a little bit. those two things will net you a larger gain than the chip and hardly cost anything.
chips are not needed until you have more serious mods on your car. the simple stuff like open element, ultimate mods, and exhaust can be helped with a chip if it is truely custom burned but the differences will be minimal. once you start looking into intakes, cams, and heads you will need a custom chip to get everything out of the motor.

I just got a fastchip on my 91 RS. I wasn't going to, but i got a great deal on it. I like it, and did notice some difference, but don't expect that 20rwhp that jet and all of them advertise, its just not gonna happen. I paid 50 bucks for mine, and i'd do it again, but i don't know that i'd pay full price for one. Just my two cents

Rhoadster01,

Did that chip remove your speed limiter. I was looking at a fastchip for a quick fix because I don't have time to mess with my own chips and 150 bux is worth it to me to have my limiter taken off.

shifty,
go look in the tech articles. there is one called defeating the speed limiter in a LO# equiped car or somethign like that. all you have to do is wire a switch in between the VSS and the ECM and you can turn it on and off as needed. total cost, about $.69 instead of $150

I have read that artile on the switch. I thought about it but it seemed kinda goofy and "ghetto rigged". It would be cool kinda to have a switch so you could tell your passengers you are preparing for warp speed. But these cars are kinda slow so I would probably only go like 10mph faster anyways.

shiffty,

I couldn't tell you whether or not my chip eliminated the speed limiter, I haven't hit it yet. I was well into the triple digits on the highway the other night and didn't hit, so i think you should be okay. I would email them and ask at fastchip.com. They were really cool when it came to answering all of my questions. hope this helped some
