I was reading Chevy High Performance and came across an article about a "mild" 383 built by GM performance parts utilizing a TBI setup. Stats are, in my mind, pretty damn incredible.

9:1 compression Four-Bolt main block, one-piece rear seal block
4340 steel, ext. balanced crank GM powdered metal rods
GM hyperuetic pistons Vortec Iron Heads 1.94/1.5-inch valves
Hydraulic roller cam 196/206 .431/.451 112 degrees
Headers 1 5/8 inch
415 ft-lbs torque @ 3500 325 hp@4500

Now, the article doesn't provide specifics on the intake or ignition setup but im willing to guess its probably a aluminum hp manifold and a slightly modded TB. I mean its a GM parts place and they obviously didn' t get too extreme on the rest of the car so they probably didn't do too much in the intake/ignition category. I thought those stats were pretty incredible considering that little cam and the heads and im sure this setup could EASILY be improved upon. In a 3600 pound Chevelle with 3.08 gears, a TH350 with 2400 stall converter, 1.6 roller rockers, and Mickey Thompsons this setup ran a 12.85 at 100 feet altitude at 75 degrees and 75 percent humidity but this was done with a carb on there. It would only improve with a TBI setup. The magazine did its own independent tests and decided to use a carb.

You're right, that cam is weak as crap. I'd be good for a 305, but its far from good on that 383. I guess that shows you what power those Vortec heads are makin.

I think they under cammed it and used the wide 112 LSA cam to make sure they had a broad torque curve. Sounds like a truck engine to me.

I agree with a different cam it would make much better hp

SDPC has one in their catalog that's about the same thing except that it uses the Comp Cams Extreme 268 cam with the Performer RPM intake and 625cfm carb

407hp 460 ft lbs torque

I have that cam...the LSA is 109, not 112.

I too think you could get more out of the 383 with a bigger cam.
